Subnautica 2 has launched into Early Access and is already showing massive numbers right from day one.

The game quickly pulled in a huge wave of players on Steam, reaching a peak of 467,582 concurrent users. This early spike happened shortly after its release on March 14, showing just how much interest there is in the sequel.

The information comes from official updates shared by Subnautica’s social media accounts and player data tracked on Steam. According to those updates, Subnautica 2 has already sold over 1 million copies across all platforms, including PC and Xbox Series X/S. Shortly after, developer Unknown Worlds reported that the game had passed 2 million sales within just 12 hours of launch. The game is also available through Game Pass, although exact player numbers from that service have not been made public.

To understand how big this jump is, it helps to compare it to the first Subnautica. The original game reached a peak of just over 51,000 concurrent players on Steam. Its follow-up, Subnautica: Below Zero, peaked at around 42,000 players. That means Subnautica 2 has already far surpassed the earlier entries in terms of early player activity.

The game is also performing strongly when compared to other survival games. Titles like Rust reached a peak of 262,284 concurrent players on Steam, while newer survival games such as Windrose hit around 222,134. Another recent example, Dune: Awakening, also saw a strong launch, but Subnautica 2 has still managed to stand out in the same competitive space.

This strong launch is important for Unknown Worlds and its publisher Krafton. The publisher reportedly tied a bonus system to the game’s performance, which became part of earlier discussions and disputes within the company. That makes the early success even more significant for the studio.

With such a strong start, Subnautica 2 now enters its Early Access phase with a lot of attention on it. The big question is whether it can keep this level of interest over time as more updates and content are added.
