Ridley Scott Quietly Reveals He's Rewriting the Next 'Alien' Film, and One Familiar Android Is Coming Back

The ‘Alien‘ franchise has always thrived on reinvention, with each new chapter reshaping how audiences see the Xenomorph mythology. From Ellen Ripley’s original nightmare aboard the Nostromo to the prequel era that dove into questions of creation and artificial life, the series has rarely stood still for long.

He told French outlet AlloCiné that ‘the one that just came out [Alien: Romulus] was OK,’ adding that he felt the series ‘needs some help,’ which is what pulled him back into the writers’ chair.

Rather than continuing directly from ‘Romulus,’ Scott is looking further back in the timeline. He explained that he already has a footprint for the next ‘Alien’ film, noting that after ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant,’ he’s picking up where ‘Covenant’ left off with Fassbender, whose character now believes he’s Ozymandias.

That reference lands with real weight for longtime fans. David’s fixation with Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem “Ozymandias” was a recurring thread throughout ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Covenant,’ symbolizing his god-complex and belief that empires, and their creators, are destined to crumble. Bringing that framing back suggests Scott intends to finally push David’s arc to its endpoint.

This isn’t the first time whispers of a ‘Covenant’ follow-up have surfaced. Plans for a direct sequel centered on David existed years ago but were shelved when the studio pivoted toward what eventually became ‘Alien: Romulus.’ Scott has long expressed interest in continuing that Prometheus-Covenant storyline, and reports suggest he pushed back against including David in Romulus specifically so he could keep the character’s fate in his own hands.

Scott’s fascination with David appears tied to something bigger than franchise mythology. The director has spoken about his broader unease with artificial intelligence, describing the danger in AI eventually surpassing human control, calling it something that could go off “like a bomb.” Framing David’s next chapter around that anxiety would give the film a distinctly modern edge, even as it closes out a story rooted in 2012’s ‘Prometheus.’

It remains unclear whether Scott will direct this new installment himself or simply guide it as writer and producer, a role he’s occupied on several recent ‘Alien’ projects.
