‘Rings of Power’ Just Gave Fans Their First Look at Isildur’s Long-Lost Brother & We Love It
Middle-earth’s royal bloodlines have always carried weight far beyond the individual characters wearing the crowns, and Season 3 of Prime Video’s epic fantasy series is preparing to expand one of its most consequential family trees. Fans already familiar with Isildur’s fateful role in Middle-earth’s history are about to meet someone who has been missing from the story so far.
That gap in the family tree is finally being filled. During the San Diego Comic Con Hall H panel for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,’ Prime Video revealed its first official look at Andrew Richardson stepping into the world of Middle-earth as Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and younger brother to Isildur.
The character introduction places Richardson within one of the most historically significant families in Tolkien’s mythology, tied directly to the founding of the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. Anarion’s addition to the cast signals that Season 3 is preparing to dig deeper into the human lineage that eventually shapes the events leading toward the Third Age.
Richardson was announced alongside several other new cast additions revealed during the same panel, including Eddie Marsan as Thrain, a descendant of Dwarven royalty connected to ‘The Hobbit,’ and Adam Young as Marnukh, a mysterious original Orc character whose true allegiances remain unclear heading into the new season. Zubin Varla also joined the cast as Khamul the Easterling, a Ringwraith making his debut this season.
That expanding ensemble reflects just how much ground Season 3 appears determined to cover. According to the new synopsis shared at the panel, Middle-earth finds itself fully at war this season, with Sauron drawing closer to completing the One Ring while different factions across the realm are forced to determine where their loyalties ultimately lie.
The panel also unveiled the season’s first official trailer, which opens with Sauron, played by Charlie Vickers, addressing his followers as molten metal is poured into a familiar ring shaped mold. The footage weaves through several major storylines, including a happier moment between Galadriel and her newly introduced love interest Celeborn, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, alongside darker threads involving encroaching Orc forces and the mysterious Dark Wizard played by Ciaran Hinds.
Adding Anarion into that mix gives the trailer’s broader themes of impending war and shifting alliances an even more personal stake for longtime fans of the source material. Isildur’s story has always carried enormous weight within Tolkien’s mythology, and introducing his brother opens the door to exploring that family dynamic in ways the series has not previously had the chance to do.

Beyond the human storylines, the panel also confirmed a wave of new creatures set to appear this season, including Fell-beasts, war elephants known as Mumakil, and armored figures called Nazgnagol, described as Second Age versions of the Nazgul. Those Nazgnagol even made a surprise physical appearance during the Hall H presentation itself, walking onto the stage in a moment designed to pay tribute to Sauron’s growing menace.
With so many new characters and creatures being introduced simultaneously, Season 3 is shaping up to be the most ambitious chapter of the series yet in terms of sheer scale. Richardson’s addition as Anarion fits neatly within that larger expansion, giving the show another thread to pull as it builds toward the events that will eventually define the Second Age’s collapse into legend.
