Simon Pegg Is Giving the Balrog a Voice for the First Time in ‘Rings of Power’ History

Middle-earth has never actually heard from one of its most terrifying creatures, at least not in words audiences could understand. Ever since the fiery demon first stirred beneath the mines of Khazad-dum, its presence has been defined entirely by roars, flames, and pure destructive menace rather than anything resembling dialogue.

That silence is about to end in a big way. During the San Diego Comic Con Hall H panel for ‘The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power,’ Prime Video revealed that the Balrog will finally speak in Season 3, and the voice behind that historic first belongs to a genuinely unexpected choice.

Simon Pegg has officially joined the cast as the voice of the Balrog, marking the first time the ancient creature will have actual dialogue anywhere in the franchise. The casting was announced through a video shown exclusively to the Hall H audience, giving convention attendees a genuine surprise moment before the news reached the wider public.

Pegg brings serious genre credibility to the role, having built a career across franchises like ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz.’ Stepping into the role of a fire demon represents about as far a departure from those earlier performances as an actor could possibly take, making the casting choice all the more surprising for longtime fans of his work.

Showrunner Patrick McKay offered insight into why the creative team decided this was the right season to finally give the Balrog a voice. He described the creature as an intelligent, strategic, dangerous adversary, according to Collider’s coverage of the panel, teasing that the Balrog will share direct scenes with Sauron as the Dark Lord attempts to learn its ability to withstand fire in order to forge the One Ring.

That connection to Sauron’s ring forging storyline gives the Balrog a much more central role in Season 3’s plot than fans might have expected. Rather than simply lurking beneath the mountain as a looming threat, the creature now appears set to become an active participant in one of the season’s most consequential storylines.

Pegg’s casting was not the only reveal to come out of the panel. Prime Video also confirmed new additions to the ensemble, including Eddie Marsan as Thrain, a descendant of Dwarven royalty tied to ‘The Hobbit,’ Andrew Richardson as Anarion, Elendil’s younger son and Isildur’s brother, and Adam Young as Marnukh, a mysterious original Orc character whose true nature remains unclear.

Beyond the new cast additions, a featurette shown at the panel titled ‘Bringing Season Three’s Creatures to Life’ teased several other creatures making their debut this season, including Fell-beasts, the war elephants known as Mumakil, and four fully armored figures called Nazgnagol. Those Nazgnagol reportedly represent Second Age incarnations of the Nazgul, and they made a memorable in-person appearance during the panel itself, interrupting the presentation in a moment designed to pay homage to Sauron.

The Balrog was last seen at the end of Season 2, when King Durin III sacrificed himself trying to force the creature back into the depths after it had already killed King Durin. Despite that confrontation, the Balrog survived, setting up its return this season with considerably higher stakes attached to its role in the story.
