Robert Downey Jr. Drops a Bombshell Comparison Between ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Infinity War’
As excitement continues to build for Avengers: Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. has opened up about the pressure behind the upcoming Marvel movie and why he believes it shares something important with Avengers: Infinity War.
The comments come from an interview with CBR, where Downey spoke alongside director Joe Russo about their Marvel journey and the challenges of creating another major Avengers event film. During the conversation, Downey compared Doomsday to Infinity War and explained why the villain plays such a critical role in making the story work.
According to Downey, one of the biggest reasons Infinity War connected with audiences was the strength of its main villain, Thanos. Played by Josh Brolin, the character became one of Marvel’s most memorable antagonists and helped make the film feel different from previous superhero movies.
While discussing Avengers: Doomsday, Downey pointed to that same idea and suggested that a powerful villain is essential for the success of any major blockbuster.
“But you’re only as good as your bad guy, tying Doomsday to Infinity War specifically. And again, the one thing everybody could rally around is, ‘You’re going to have to contend with Brolin.’”
The actor is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a very different role. After years of playing Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, Downey is now set to portray Victor Von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom. The casting announcement surprised fans when it was first revealed during San Diego Comic-Con, and questions about the character’s role have continued ever since.
Although Downey avoided revealing major plot details, he spoke about the work being done behind the scenes to make sure Doomsday can live up to the enormous expectations created by Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
During the interview, he explained that the creative team has spent a lot of time figuring out how to move forward after those films. He suggested that simply trying to repeat what worked before would not be enough. Instead, the goal is to find new ideas and new ways to tell a story that feels meaningful for audiences.
Joe Russo also addressed the challenge of making another Avengers film after two of the biggest superhero movies ever released. According to the director, the answer is not simply bigger action scenes or higher stakes. He believes emotional depth is what truly matters.
Russo said that emotional complexity helps make stories more powerful and memorable. He added that Avengers: Doomsday may be the most emotionally layered Marvel film he has worked on so far.
The filmmakers know expectations are high. Infinity War and Endgame became global events, bringing together heroes from across the Marvel universe and delivering moments that fans still discuss years later. Because of that, every new Avengers movie faces comparisons to those earlier successes.
Despite the pressure, both Downey and Russo sounded excited about what they are creating. They described the project as an opportunity to give audiences another memorable experience while continuing the larger Marvel story.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18. As Marvel slowly reveals more information about the film, fans are eager to see whether Doctor Doom can have the same impact that Thanos had in Infinity War and whether the next Avengers adventure can reach the same level of excitement that defined Marvel’s biggest era.
