Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Reportedly Set to Return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
Tony Stark’s sacrifice at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains one of the most emotionally definitive moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, closing out Robert Downey Jr.’s decade-plus run as the character who essentially launched the franchise. That ending felt permanent at the time, treated by Marvel as a farewell too significant to ever walk back.
Since then, though, Downey has already made his way back into the MCU fold, this time stepping into the role of Victor Von Doom for the studio’s next two massive crossover events. His casting as Doom sent shockwaves through the fandom when it was first revealed, and it immediately sparked speculation about whether his ties to Tony Stark might somehow resurface down the line.
Now, that speculation has picked back up, with a new report claiming Iron Man himself is expected to return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, Tony Stark will make his way back into the franchise for the two-part crossover event, despite his character’s definitive death years earlier.
Given the nature of the Multiverse Saga, any potential return would almost certainly involve a variant version of Stark rather than a resurrection of the original character fans said goodbye to in ‘Endgame.’ That approach would allow Marvel to bring the beloved character back into the fold without undoing the emotional weight of his original sacrifice.
Downey himself has been fairly open about the possibility of stepping back into Stark’s shoes again, even while juggling his current commitment to playing Doom. Speaking with Jodie Foster for Variety, he described the character as deeply embedded in who he is, calling Stark probably the character most like himself despite being far cooler, according to Variety.
That kind of personal connection to the role has only fueled fan hope that Marvel will find a way to bring some version of Stark back before the Multiverse Saga concludes. Adding to the intrigue, some reports have also floated the idea of a major on-screen showdown between Iron Man and Doctor Doom, a matchup that would carry obvious weight given Downey’s history portraying both characters.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already confirmed that both the X-Men and Iron Man will be recast following ‘Secret Wars,’ signaling a broader reset for some of the franchise’s most iconic roles once the current saga wraps. That timeline suggests any appearance from Downey’s Stark in ‘Secret Wars’ could serve as one final send-off before a new actor eventually inherits the armor.
Other reports have suggested that previously deceased heroes and villains could return during this post-‘Secret Wars’ era in altered forms, tied to how the franchise’s timeline gets reshaped by the story’s multiversal reset. Whether Stark’s reported return fits into that broader plan or stands as a more isolated cameo remains to be seen.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters first this December ahead of ‘Secret Wars’ the following year, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see how much of this speculation holds up.
