Robert Downey Jr. Wants a Ghost Rider and Spider-Noir Team Up, and Honestly, We Need This to Happen

Marvel’s Comic Con weekend just keeps giving, and the ripple effects are still being felt days later. Between major casting reveals and a flood of behind-the-scenes teases, this year’s panel gave fans plenty to dissect, and some of the best moments came from the stars themselves riffing on ideas that were not technically part of any official announcement.

One of those moments involved Robert Downey Jr, who has spent the past several years reinventing himself within the franchise as its next great villain. With Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider freshly confirmed at the same event, conversation naturally turned toward how that character might eventually connect to the rest of Marvel’s growing multiverse of properties.

That is when Downey offered up his own personal wish list item, saying he would love to see Gosling’s Ghost Rider team up with Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir. According to comments relayed through Entertainment Weekly, Downey specifically pictured the pairing riding together on a motorcycle, complete with a sidecar, a visual that instantly captured fans’ imaginations online.

The idea lands at a particularly fun moment for both characters. Gosling was confirmed as the new cinematic Ghost Rider during Marvel’s Hall H panel, with Shawn Levy set to direct a standalone film scheduled for release in 2028, marking the character’s long awaited return to the big screen following Cage’s two outings as Johnny Blaze back in 2007 and 2011.

Cage, meanwhile, has already made his own unexpected return to the Spider-Man corner of Marvel’s universe, though not in the MCU proper. He currently stars as the title character in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir series, a black and white detective drama built around the same version of the character he originally voiced in the animated film ‘Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse’.

Given that Cage previously played Ghost Rider himself, the idea of him now sharing the screen with an entirely different actor taking on that same mantle adds an extra layer of meta humor to Downey’s suggestion. It also plays into the growing sense that Marvel’s multiverse era is only getting started when it comes to blending characters who technically exist across separate corners of the franchise.

Fans reacted with immediate enthusiasm to the pairing, with the visual of a flaming motorcycle carrying a black and white detective in a sidecar proving to be an easy sell online. It fits neatly into the kind of unexpected crossover energy Marvel has leaned into throughout its ongoing Multiverse Saga, especially with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ still on the horizon as a potential playground for exactly this kind of team-up.

Whether Downey’s comment amounts to anything more than a fun hypothetical remains to be seen, since neither Gosling’s Ghost Rider film nor Spider-Noir’s future seasons have confirmed any crossover plans. Still, with Marvel clearly willing to experiment across mediums and tones lately, the idea does not feel entirely out of reach.

For now, fans will have to settle for imagining what that motorcycle ride might actually look like on screen. Given how much buzz the pairing generated within hours of being mentioned, do not be surprised if Marvel takes note of just how badly people want to see it happen.
