Rogue Has Spoken: Inde Navarrette’s First ‘X-Men’ Accent Tease Is Just One Word, and Fans Can’t Stop Replaying It

Few things define Rogue as much as her voice. The Southern drawl and the pet name she hands out like a weapon have been part of the character for decades, so the question of how the next live-action version will sound has hung over Marvel’s mutant reboot since the casting news broke. The ‘X-Men’ accent debate just got its first real data point.

Marvel Studios revealed Inde Navarrette as Rogue at D23 in August, alongside a cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm and Christopher Abbott as Professor X. Adam Driver is playing the villain. Jake Schreier directs, and the film is set for May 5, 2028.

Fans have been waiting to hear what Navarrette sounds like in the role, and now they have. During a red carpet interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, she was asked by etalkCTV to give a sample of the accent she’ll use in the film.

The moment came before a TIFF panel on her breakout horror hit ‘Obsession.’ Navarrette was caught off guard and admitted she hasn’t done much practice yet. All she offered was a one-word sample, Rogue’s signature pet name, and she said she plans to work on it and talk with the Marvel team about what they want to do.

It’s a light moment, but fans seized on it. Comparisons to Rogue’s most famous voice were immediate, and the actress made it clear the accent is very much a work in progress.

This isn’t the first time Navarrette has talked about the accent. She told ET at TIFF that she grew up in Texas for much of her life, and that she has a special fondness for the Southern women she remembers, with Corpus Christi being the city she mentioned specifically. Rogue, however, is from Mississippi, so she said she wants to travel there to do the character justice.

That approach suggests she’s aiming for the more pronounced, comic-accurate drawl. Speaking on The Kyle Buchanan Show, she also said she’s excited to explore Rogue’s Southern voice and can’t wait to get started.

The stakes are high. For many fans, the definitive Rogue voice belongs to Lenore Zann, who has voiced the character since the original 1992 animated series, returned for ‘X-Men ’97’ and still plays her in ‘Marvel Rivals.’ Zann even recorded a video message in Rogue’s Southern accent to welcome Navarrette to the role.

On the live-action side, Anna Paquin played Rogue in four ‘X-Men’ movies but largely dropped the Southern characterization after the first film. That means Navarrette could become the first live-action actor to fully commit to the character’s Mississippi roots. She also faces fan debate, as some had championed other actresses like Cailee Spaeny for the part, and some fans argue she won the role on the strength of her ‘Obsession’ stardom.

The timing couldn’t be better for the rising star. ‘Obsession’ turned her into one of the year’s biggest breakouts, and she won Best Actress in a Horror Movie at the Critics Choice Super Awards. She’s also receiving the Breakthrough Actress Award at the Critics Choice Celebración, and Focus Features is reportedly campaigning her for Best Actress.

Next up, she’s set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ on October 31 with musical guest Gracie Abrams. It’s a rare double of an Oscar campaign and a Marvel franchise role, all in the same year.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has said the reboot will be the first of many projects in the Mutant Saga. Before that, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings back the original Fox ‘X-Men’ cast in December, and it’s expected to lead into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ Navarrette’s Rogue is reportedly expected to appear in that film, though that remains a report.

For now, one word is all we have. It’s enough to make fans eager to hear a lot more.

Do you think Inde Navarrette can deliver the Southern drawl that X-Men fans expect from Rogue?
