The list included a recommendation for Sean Mckeever’s 2008 Jean Grey Origins one shot, framed as a starting point for anyone unfamiliar with the character’s history as Marvel’s most powerful mutant.

Some fans quickly interpreted that inclusion as an outright confirmation that Sink is playing Jean Grey in the film. Empire’s own language tells a more cautious story, since the outlet specifically framed the pick as relevant only if Sink turns out to be playing the character, explicitly calling it still a big if rather than a settled fact.

That distinction matters because Sadie Sink’s actual role in ‘Brand New Day’ remains officially unconfirmed by both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Despite that, the character has become one of the worst-kept secrets in the MCU, with a growing chorus of insiders and scoopers insisting behind-the-scenes details all point toward Jean Grey.

Industry insider Daniel Richtman has been among the most direct, stating plainly that he can confirm Sink is playing Jean Grey with total certainty. Other reports have pointed to trailer footage showing Sink’s character using telepathic mind control, along with costume colors that closely echo Jean Grey’s traditional yellow and green comic book look.

Sink herself has spent months dodging the question with practiced ease rather than confirming or denying anything outright. During one interview, she was asked to imagine walking into a store and buying some jeans, grey for instance, only to respond with a brief, knowing silence before the interviewer moved on, letting the moment speak for itself.

In another promotional video for the film, Sink offered what she jokingly called three exclusive confirmed answers, stating she can confirm she is not Spider-Man, she can confirm she is not Aunt May, and she can definitely confirm that she is in the movie. That kind of playful non-answer has become something of a signature for her entire press tour.

The mystery carries extra weight given where Marvel’s mutant storyline is headed next. With an eventual ‘X-Men’ reboot already confirmed to arrive after ‘Avengers Secret Wars’, introducing Jean Grey through a Spider-Man film would mirror how Marvel has previously used one hero’s movie to quietly set up a completely different corner of its universe.

For now, the true nature of Sink’s role remains something audiences will only learn for certain once they see the film for themselves. Empire’s comic recommendation may have added fuel to an already blazing rumor, but as the outlet itself acknowledged, nothing about Jean Grey’s involvement has actually been confirmed just yet.
