Russo Brothers Drop New Cryptic ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Tease
The mystery surrounding Avengers: Doomsday may finally be building toward something bigger. After months of silence from Marvel Studios, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have shared a new cryptic image online that has fans wondering if a major reveal is right around the corner.
The photo, posted on the Russo Brothers’ Instagram account, features Doctor Doom’s famous comic book logo alongside the words “SXSW London.” The simple image immediately grabbed attention from Marvel fans, many of whom believe it could be teasing new footage, a trailer, or even the first official look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
Marvel officially announced Downey’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the iconic villain last year, but fans still have not seen him in costume. Outside of rumors, set leaks, and fan theories, very little has been revealed about Avengers: Doomsday. That lack of information has only increased anticipation for what is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest projects.
According to information shared by the Russo Brothers, they are scheduled to appear at SXSW London on June 2 for multiple panels. They will also take part in a screening of Avengers: Infinity War later that day. Because of those appearances, many fans believe Marvel could use the event to unveil a teaser trailer or some new footage from Doomsday.
However, there is another possibility. Some fans think the teaser may simply be hinting that Downey will appear alongside the Russo Brothers at the event. Since SXSW London is not traditionally a major Marvel marketing platform, others believe the studio may save its next big reveal for San Diego Comic-Con later this summer.
For now, Marvel is staying quiet.
Still, Joe Russo recently offered a few hints about what audiences can expect from the film. Speaking about the project, he suggested that Avengers: Doomsday will be very different from previous Marvel movies.
“What Marvel’s done better than anybody in history is that serialized storytelling, at scale. And Doomsday is a complete reinvention, it’s another swing,” Russo said. “I don’t think the audience is expecting it at all, what happens in the movie, and its tone and its subject matter. But I’m hoping it feels like another profound shift for them in that serialized story.”
He also discussed how the emotional themes from earlier Marvel stories continue to influence the upcoming film.
“Tony Stark and Steve Rogers remain very empathetic and rootable and you’ll see to this day people are divided over who was more relatable in Civil War,” Russo explained. “It’s very much this sort of unresolved aspirations of those characters and flaws of those characters. It continues to unfold as we move into Doomsday.”
Marvel has already confirmed a massive cast for the movie. Returning MCU stars will be joined by members of the Fantastic Four and several actors from the X-Men franchise. Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is expected to be at the center of the story as heroes from different universes collide in what Marvel describes as a major multiversal event.
Whether the Russo Brothers’ latest teaser leads to a trailer, a surprise appearance from Downey, or something else entirely remains unknown. But one thing is clear: Marvel fans are watching closely, and excitement for Avengers: Doomsday continues to grow as the countdown to its December 18 release continues.
