Marvel Studios has been remarkably tight-lipped about its plans to fold the X-Men into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the pieces of that puzzle keep quietly assembling themselves through a steady drip of insider reports. With ‘Black Panther 3’ and Jake Schreier’s X-Men reboot potentially landing close together on the release calendar, speculation has been building for weeks that Wakanda’s next chapter could double as the introduction point for a major mutant.
That speculation took a step forward recently when a scooper reported that ‘Black Panther 3’ will introduce a new mutant character to the MCU, following a similar strategy to how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is expected to quietly debut Jean Grey ahead of her larger role in the X-Men universe.
The insider did not reveal which specific mutant would be involved, leaving fans in the comments to speculate largely between Storm and Magneto as the two most likely candidates.
Now a new report is narrowing that speculation considerably. According to insider Main Middle Man, director Ryan Coogler is said to be involved with the casting process for Storm specifically, with the character rumored to appear in ‘Black Panther 3’. The same report claims she is expected to showcase the full potential of her powers, going as far as describing her as the most powerful mutant after Jean Grey.
That casting timeline lines up neatly with the broader production calendar. ‘Black Panther 3’ is reportedly scheduled for a February 2028 release, positioning it to land close to Schreier’s X-Men reboot, which is currently targeting a May 2028 debut. Marvel has previously used this exact strategy before, introducing Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ ahead of his solo debut, a playbook that would make perfect sense for easing Storm into the franchise before a larger X-Men ensemble comes together.
Storm’s connection to Wakanda also gives this pairing some built in narrative logic beyond just scheduling convenience. In the comics, the character shares deep ties to Africa as the daughter of a Kenyan princess descended from a line of witch priestesses, and her storyline has even included a marriage to T’Challa himself, giving the character an organic reason to cross paths with the Black Panther corner of the MCU specifically.
The rumor mill around who might actually play the character has been active for weeks. Names like Jodie Turner-Smith, Anna Diop, KiKi Layne, Cynthia Erivo, and Jayme Lawson have all been floated as possibilities, with some outlets pointing specifically to Lawson given her age fitting Marvel’s reported push for a younger X-Men cast and her prior collaboration with Coogler on ‘Sinners’.
Ryan Coogler is confirmed to be returning for ‘Black Panther 3’ following 2025’s ‘Sinners’, with Letitia Wright reprising her role as Shuri and Denzel Washington also joining the cast in an undisclosed role.
