Ryan Coogler’s Reported Storm Casting Move Could Reshape ‘Black Panther 3’ Entirely

Marvel’s mutant reboot has spent weeks generating one casting headline after another, but the latest development takes the speculation somewhere fans didn’t quite expect. Rather than surfacing through the usual X-Men rumor channels, this particular update ties directly into one of the studio’s other major upcoming franchises.

That connection centers on ‘Black Panther 3,’ the long-awaited third installment from director Ryan Coogler, who’s returning to the franchise following 2025’s ‘Sinners’ with Letitia Wright once again reprising her role. What started as a film focused squarely on Wakanda’s future has now become tangled up in Marvel’s broader mutant strategy.

According to insider Main Middle Man, Coogler is reportedly involved in the casting process for Storm specifically, with the character rumored to appear in ‘Black Panther 3’ rather than the standalone ‘X-Men’ film currently in development. The same report claims she’s expected to showcase the full extent of her powers, going as far as describing her as the most powerful mutant in the MCU after Jean Grey.

That framing lines up with a broader pattern Marvel appears to be following with its mutant rollout. The strategy echoes how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ quietly introduced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey ahead of her larger role in the eventual ‘X-Men’ film, suggesting Storm’s debut in ‘Black Panther 3’ could serve a similar function, planting a major mutant character within an already-established franchise before her story expands elsewhere.

The connection between Storm and Black Panther’s world isn’t purely a marketing convenience, either. In the comics, Ororo Munroe shares deep ties to Africa as the daughter of a Kenyan princess descended from a line of witch priestesses, and her storyline has even included a marriage to T’Challa himself, giving the character a genuinely organic reason to cross paths with the Wakandan side of the MCU.

That comic book history complicates things slightly given where the franchise currently stands. With T’Challa having died and his son with Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, now stepping into the Black Panther mantle following David Jonsson’s casting reveal at Comic-Con, any storyline involving a marriage between Storm and the previous Black Panther seems unlikely to carry over directly.

Casting speculation for who might actually play Storm has been building for weeks regardless of which film she ultimately debuts in. Names like Jodie Turner-Smith, Anna Diop, KiKi Layne, Cynthia Erivo, and Jayme Lawson have all been floated as possibilities, with several outlets pointing specifically to Lawson given both her age fitting Marvel’s reported push toward a younger X-Men cast and her prior collaboration with Coogler on ‘Sinners.’

As with most Marvel casting reports at this stage, none of this has been officially confirmed by the studio, and everything currently circulating should be treated as industry speculation rather than settled fact. Still, having a director as high-profile as Coogler reportedly steering the casting process himself lends the rumor more weight than most of the scattered names floating around the broader X-Men rumor mill.

With ‘Black Panther 3’ now confirmed for a December 15, 2028 release and Marvel’s fuller X-Men roster expected to be unveiled at this month’s D23 event, fans may not have to wait too long to find out whether Storm’s live-action debut really does happen in Wakanda rather than alongside the rest of her mutant teammates.
