David Jonsson’s Black Panther Debut Could Happen Sooner Than Anyone Expected, Even Before ‘Black Panther 3’

The dust has barely settled on Marvel Studios’ biggest Comic-Con reveal in years, and the rumor mill is already spinning it into something even bigger. Fans spent the weekend processing the news that a new face would be stepping into the Black Panther mantle, and now speculation is heating up about exactly when audiences will actually see him.

That reveal centered on David Jonsson, the British actor known for ‘Alien: Romulus’ and ‘The Long Walk,’ who was confirmed during Marvel’s Hall H panel as the next Black Panther. He’s set to play T’Challa II, the adult version of the young prince introduced at the end of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ as the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia.

Now a fresh report is suggesting Jonsson’s version of the character might arrive far earlier than his own standalone film. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, T’Challa II is expected to make his MCU debut in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ rather than waiting for ‘Black Panther 3’ to introduce him properly.

If accurate, that timeline would put Jonsson on screen as early as December 2027, well ahead of ‘Black Panther 3’s’ current December 2028 release date. It would also mean Marvel is using its next massive Avengers event to formally launch the character before giving him his own dedicated spotlight.

There’s a certain logic to that approach, given where the larger franchise is heading. Kevin Feige has already signaled that the MCU’s timeline will tighten up considerably after ‘Secret Wars,’ something many fans have interpreted as something close to a soft reboot for the franchise going forward.

Introducing a new generation of hero through an ensemble event before spinning them off into a solo film would fit neatly into that broader plan, giving audiences a proper introduction to Jonsson’s T’Challa II without asking ‘Black Panther 3’ to carry the full weight of that reveal alone.

The casting itself came together in a way that even Marvel’s own leadership seemed genuinely excited to share. Feige revealed that Ryan Coogler had quietly met with Jonsson months before any formal casting search had even begun, catching the studio off guard with how confident he was in the decision.

According to Feige, Coogler called him after that meeting and simply said he’d found his guy, with Feige explaining that the search hadn’t even started before Coogler beat everyone to the punch. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes story that only adds to the sense that this casting was less about a traditional audition process and more about Coogler recognizing something specific in Jonsson from the jump.

Little else about ‘Black Panther 3’ has been confirmed so far, though Marvel has already revealed that Denzel Washington will join the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role. Given that Toussaint was still a young child the last time audiences saw him, some kind of time jump or reality-altering event will need to explain how he grows into the version of T’Challa II fans are about to meet.

That’s exactly where ‘Secret Wars’ comes back into the conversation, since its comic book source material famously involves a fractured multiverse being stitched back together into a single altered reality. A story built around reshaping existence would give Marvel plenty of narrative cover to age up its newest hero well before his solo debut.
