Ryan Gosling, 45, and Eva Mendes, 52, Reunite in Public After More Than 10 Years Away From the Spotlight
Fans got a rare surprise this week when Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes appeared together in public for the first time in more than ten years. The couple joined each other on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 5, giving viewers an unusual look at a relationship they have mostly kept out of the spotlight.
The appearance happened while Gosling was promoting his upcoming film Project Hail Mary. Instead of focusing only on the movie, the actor used the moment to celebrate Mendes’ birthday during the show. According to the broadcast, Gosling asked the audience to help him mark the special day for his partner.
Mendes was brought onto the stage unexpectedly by a member of the show’s staff. Gosling joked about the situation with host Jimmy Fallon, hinting that his wife might not be thrilled with the public surprise. He laughed and told Fallon, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow for putting her in that position in front of a live audience.

When Mendes walked out, she wore a relaxed and casual outfit that quickly caught fans’ attention. She had on a blue and white striped Louis Vuitton cardigan that many viewers noticed Gosling had worn not long ago. She paired it with wide-leg jeans and a T-shirt showing the cover art from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1980 album Double Fantasy.
The birthday celebration soon turned into a full moment on stage. Fallon revealed that the marching band from North Bergen High School was present to play Happy Birthday. As the band performed, a flag was raised, and confetti fell around the stage. Gosling clapped along with the music while Mendes stood beside him smiling, and she eventually kissed him on the cheek.
For longtime fans, the moment felt special because the pair have rarely appeared together in public. Their last major public outing as a couple happened back in 2013 during the premiere of The Place Beyond the Pines. That film is also where they first met and started dating.
Since then, Gosling and Mendes have focused heavily on their private life. They welcomed two daughters together, Esmeralda and Amada, and have mostly avoided red carpets and public events.
Mendes has talked about this choice before on social media, explaining that she prefers to keep her family life out of the spotlight. She once wrote that she is not comfortable sharing such personal parts of her life with the world.
Even so, Mendes has always shown support for Gosling’s work. In past posts, she has said she would love to work with him again one day if the right project comes along. Right now, Gosling is busy promoting Project Hail Mary, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 20.
The movie is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the same author who wrote The Martian. In the story, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there.
As the story unfolds, he realizes he is the only surviving member of a mission meant to save Earth from a disaster involving the sun. The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung. Early reactions from critics have been very positive, with many praising Gosling’s performance and the film’s mix of humor and high-stakes drama.
The actor already has another big project lined up for the future. In 2027, he will appear in the Star Wars universe in a new film titled Star Wars: Starfighter. The movie will be directed by Shawn Levy and will feature Gosling as a mentor figure in a story that takes place after the events of the sequel trilogy.
