Ryan Hurst Shares New Kratos Selfie Days After Shocking ‘God of War’ Exit

Amazon’s live-action take on ‘God of War‘ has been one of the most heavily scrutinized TV productions of the year, with every casting reveal and set photo picked apart by a fanbase deeply protective of the source material. Based on the acclaimed 2018 and 2023 video games, the series follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey across the Nine Realms, and expectations for getting that dynamic right have been sky-high from the start.

Much of that scrutiny centered on Ryan Hurst, who was cast as Kratos back in January and spent months physically transforming for the role. When Amazon released its first official image of Hurst in costume back in February, the reaction was brutal, with fans comparing the look to cosplay and flooding social media with jokes at the production’s expense.

Now, months later, Hurst has posted a new Instagram Story showing himself in character as Kratos, and the timing has caught fans’ attention for a very different reason. The photo arrives just days after news broke that Hurst is no longer attached to the series at all, having been recast following a serious on-set injury.

That injury occurred in late June, when Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt roughly four months into filming. The damage was severe enough to require surgery, with recovery estimated to take as long as a year, a timeline Amazon reportedly determined would push production into 2027 and prove financially unworkable for the studio.

Deadline reported that four episodes had already been filmed with Hurst in the role before his injury forced production to pause. That means all of his previously shot material will likely need to be reshot entirely once a new actor steps in, adding significant cost and delay to a series that had already weathered plenty of turbulence.

Dave Bautista has since emerged as the frontrunner to take over the role, with sources telling Variety that he’s currently in talks to become the new Kratos. Bautista’s established physicality and prior collaborations with Amazon MGM Studios have made him an appealing option for a production eager to get back on track, with filming expected to resume in Vancouver by mid-October.

Against that backdrop, Hurst’s decision to share a new Kratos photo feels less like a promotional beat and more like a personal moment. The image shows a noticeably different look from that criticized first reveal, with fuller beard styling that fans have pointed out looks closer to the character’s video game appearance than anything Amazon had shown publicly before.

Voice actor Christopher Judge, who has portrayed Kratos in the games since 2018, had previously praised Hurst’s casting, calling him both a great actor and a lifelong fan of the franchise well-suited to carry the character into live action. That context makes Hurst’s exit sting even more for fans who had come around on the casting after the initial backlash faded.

With Bautista’s deal still being finalized and reshoots looming for the episodes already completed, ‘God of War’ now faces a very different production reality than the one it started with earlier this year. Whether Hurst’s late photo represents unreleased footage or simply a farewell keepsake, it’s clear the actor wanted fans to see his take on the role one more time before someone else picks up the axe.
