Ryan Murphy Reveals ‘AHS 13’ Actors Will Play Two Characters From Different Seasons in the Same Scene

‘American Horror Story‘ has spent thirteen years building one of television’s most devoted horror fanbases, and every new season brings the same question fans can’t stop asking: which twisted world will Ryan Murphy pull them into next. This time around, the answer is apparently all of them at once.

Murphy has spent months teasing that Season 13 would function as a kind of culmination for the entire anthology series, bringing back beloved characters from across the show’s history for what he’s previously compared to an Avengers-style team-up against a shared threat. That framing alone had fans buzzing, but new details reveal the crossover runs even deeper than expected.

According to Murphy, some of the returning actors will actually be playing two different characters from two separate past seasons within the very same scene. He specifically highlighted Evan Peters as an example, explaining that at one point during filming, Peters was portraying two distinct characters simultaneously and having them talk to each other, a technical feat Murphy described as genuinely fun and tricky to pull off, adding that he’s already edited most of these scenes and is happy with how they turned out.

That kind of layered performance fits the sheer scale of what Murphy has planned for the ensemble. Sarah Paulson is reportedly playing somewhere between six and seven different characters pulled from her extensive AHS history, while Jessica Lange is set to reprise all four of her most iconic roles, including Constance Langdon from ‘Murder House,’ Sister Jude from ‘Asylum,’ Fiona Goode from ‘Coven,’ and Elsa Mars from ‘Freak Show.’ Peters himself is reportedly playing five characters total across the season.

Murphy has also been direct about which past chapters of the anthology are shaping this new season’s DNA. He explained that the storyline draws specifically from the seasons fans have responded to most, naming ‘Murder House,’ ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Freak Show,’ and ‘Cult’ as the entries feeding into the new season’s mythology.

That lineup lines up with earlier reporting confirming Peters will specifically revisit his Tate Langdon and Rubber Man persona from ‘Murder House’ alongside Kai Anderson from ‘Cult,’ setting up a direct confrontation between two of his most memorable AHS villains within the same episode. Elsewhere, Lange is reportedly set to receive a musical number, a detail Murphy has said came directly from her own request when he first pitched her on returning to the franchise.

Season 13 also introduces newer faces into this expansive returning ensemble, including Joey Pollari, who Murphy has described as serving as something of an anchor for the new storyline, tasked with grounding the season’s narrative rather than simply functioning as a nostalgia showcase for longtime viewers.

With Season 13 positioned as connecting virtually the entire AHS universe into one sprawling confrontation against what Murphy has called the ultimate evil, the technical ambition behind having actors play dueling characters in a single scene suggests this could be one of the most logistically complex seasons the franchise has ever attempted. Given Murphy’s track record of leaning into spectacle when the anthology returns to its most beloved eras, expectations are running high heading into the premiere.
