Ryan Reynolds’ ‘JeanPool’ Pantone Joke Might Be a Sneaky ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Tease
Comic-Con has always been a playground for surprise reveals, but sometimes the biggest teases come wrapped in a joke rather than an official announcement. That’s exactly the kind of stunt Ryan Reynolds pulled off this year, and fans are still trying to decode exactly what it means.
The actor spent this year’s San Diego Comic-Con quietly wandering the show floor in a denim-inspired Deadpool costume, stopping for photos with unsuspecting fans who had no idea they were standing next to Reynolds himself. It wasn’t until he crashed Marvel’s Hall H panel later that day, revealing his identity mid-bit, that the internet fully caught on.
Reynolds named the character himself, dubbing the look “Jeanpool” and sharing behind-the-scenes photos of the transformation on Instagram Stories. That naming choice, paired with a specific detail he posted afterward, has since sparked a wave of speculation about what exactly Marvel might be building toward.
The detail in question came from an Instagram post where Reynolds used the Pantone color-matching system to label his gray-toned suit as “Jean Grey 9-1963,” a playful reference to the character’s name paired with the release year of her first comic appearance. It’s the kind of joke that seems simple on the surface but carries a deliberate wink toward a much bigger storyline.
That reference points directly to a specific piece of X-Men comic history. The number nods to a classic X-Men comic issue in which the team clashes with the Avengers, a storyline centered on the villain Lucifer being sheltered by the X-Men while carrying a heart-triggered bomb capable of catastrophic damage.
The connection between that plot and the current MCU landscape hasn’t been lost on fans, especially with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ already teasing tension between the Avengers and X-Men factions. Recent trailer footage has shown Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi squaring off against Channing Tatum’s Gambit, suggesting some kind of confrontation between the two teams is already baked into the film’s plot.
The gray suit itself also carries its own comic book pedigree, tracing back to Marvel’s X-Force comics, where Wolverine’s covert team swapped their usual brighter colors for a stealthier black-and-gray palette. Deadpool first adopted that look after joining the squad in 2010’s ‘Wolverine: The Road to Hell’ #1, replacing the red sections of his classic costume with gray.
Whether any of this actually confirms Deadpool’s presence in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains unclear, since Marvel Studios has yet to officially acknowledge his involvement in the film. During his Hall H stunt, Reynolds even asked the Russo Brothers and the film’s cast directly about filming, only to be told production had already wrapped, a response that could either be read as a genuine no or simply part of the bit.
Still, bringing Reynolds all the way out for a scripted moment on the Hall H stage, paired with a comic-specific Easter egg dropped on social media, feels like more than pure coincidence to plenty of fans parsing every detail. Marvel has a well-documented history of hiding real intel inside seemingly throwaway jokes, and this wouldn’t be the first time.
For now, all anyone can do is wait and see how, or if, this particular thread pays off once the film finally arrives. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18.
