Ryan Reynolds has been a familiar face in Hollywood since the 1990s, but getting to the A-list wasn’t easy. In the early 2000s, he moved between comedies and small action roles before landing a noticeable part in the 2004 Marvel film Blade: Trinity.

He tried a lot of different genres over the years, from romantic comedies to action thrillers, but it was the superhero world that really gave him a big breakthrough. His history with Marvel has been famously rocky. Fans and Reynolds often joke about his first take on Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a version of the character that didn’t land well.

Then came 2011’s Green Lantern, a movie Reynolds has openly said he regrets doing. Everything changed in 2016 when he finally got to play Deadpool the way he had always imagined. The wise-cracking, fourth-wall-breaking antihero became a global hit and cemented Reynolds’ place in pop culture.

Surprisingly, Reynolds doesn’t consider Deadpool his favorite movie. Reflecting on a magazine cover for his 2021 film Free Guy, he revealed it is the movie he’s most proud of. “It was an absolute fastball of joy,” he said, a feeling echoed by audiences as the film earned $331 million worldwide.

Free Guy is a love letter to gaming culture. Reynolds plays a bank teller who realizes he’s actually a non-playable character in a chaotic, Grand Theft Auto-style video game. Instead of giving up, he rewrites his code and becomes the hero his world never expected. The film’s success was also thanks to a talented cast including Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, and Joe Keery.

This year, Reynolds is busier than ever. He’s preparing for the release of Mayday, an action-adventure film set to premiere on Apple TV+ on September 4. Directed by the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Reynolds stars as a Navy pilot alongside Kenneth Branagh. He described the project as a rare chance to play a character who actually needs saving.

He’s also working on Deadpool 4, which many see as his way of reconnecting with fans after a year in the spotlight. While he has hinted that the next installment may focus more on an ensemble X-Men story, Deadpool remains his most recognized character. Reynolds will also voice a character in the upcoming live-action/animated comedy Animal Friends, joining Jason Momoa and Aubrey Plaza.

Outside of acting, Reynolds keeps himself busy as a producer through his company, Maximum Effort, and as a co-owner of Wrexham AFC. His influence clearly goes beyond the screen, proving he’s more than just a leading man.
