‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Malik’s Impossible Call Tests the Squad
Shemar Moore’s return as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson was never going to be a simple victory lap. ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles‘ trades the network procedural comfort of the original for a darker, grittier Starz drama. If you’re looking for the ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ episode 2 recap and ending explained, the new episode ‘Take the Shot’ puts both Hondo’s leadership and his squad’s loyalty under pressure.
The spinoff picks up after ‘S.W.A.T.’ ended its eight-season run on CBS. Hondo is pulled out of forced retirement and handed an experimental unit of younger officers who have struggled to fit within the LAPD’s traditional system. Starz renewed the show for a second season in August, more than a month before the first season premiered on Sept. 25.
The premiere set up the show’s central mystery. In its final scene, recruit Malik, played by Adain Bradley, meets with a mysterious woman and is handed a file, then says Hondo doesn’t deserve the badge or the command. Hondo, meanwhile, learned that Commander Hicks, played by Patrick St. Esprit, never would have assigned him that team, and that the recruits’ files had been doctored.
That leaves Hondo hunting for a different kind of threat. He knows someone powerful downtown is making moves against him, but he remains oblivious to the mole among his own ranks. The show’s executive producer has said the story ties all of its threads together, including the death of young officer Nico Reyes in the raid that led to Hondo’s exit.
Episode 2 airs on Oct. 2 and begins with a shootout at a Korean nightclub that leaves gang leader Kim dead. The killing hands businessman Monte Barzarian, played by Cas Anvar, an opening in the arms trade, and the team is sent to serve a warrant at his warehouse. It is also a chance for Hondo to see how his recruits lead.
Things don’t go smoothly. Jude, played by Ronen Rubinstein, takes his turn as scout and fails to communicate well, nearly shooting Cassidy, played by Zyra Gorecki. The team also misses part of the building, which looks bad when Monte and his son Andre arrive, and it appears to be a weapons buy.
What starts as a gang case becomes a family power struggle. Andre ends up holding his father at gunpoint, a real-life version of a scenario the team practiced earlier in the episode. According to the official synopsis, the father-son fight boils over into a hostage standoff with deeper roots than turf.
That is where Malik takes center stage. With Malik taking point as scout for the first time, he faces an impossible call that the synopsis says will haunt both him and the squad. It lands especially hard because he is secretly working against Hondo.

The episode also introduces Hondo’s new boss, Commander Angela Pike, played by Lenora Crichlow. She makes it clear that the good old days of S.W.A.T. are over, and the larger plan reportedly is to shift S.W.A.T. responsibilities to the Sheriff’s Department if Hondo’s team fails. The showrunner has said he knew there was chemistry between Hondo and Pike as soon as they were on screen together.
Hondo doesn’t handle this alone. He turns to a friend played by Will Yun Lee, who is now working as a private detective. The pair sit with the suspicion that the problem leads back to someone near the top, though one reviewer doubts Pike is the culprit.
Away from the case, the episode adds a fresh puzzle. Ethan, whose recent brain injury explains his social awkwardness, invites the recruits to his apartment, where Jude gets a tour but is forbidden from opening one specific door. Jude respects the request, so viewers are left wondering what is behind it.
The episode keeps the larger conspiracy in the background, focusing on the recruits and their flaws. It also suggests the squad is finding a groove, even as Malik’s secret grows heavier. Episode 3 arrives Oct. 9, with new episodes every Friday through Nov. 27.
