Sabrina Carpenter Apologizes After Misunderstanding Coachella Crowd Chant
Sabrina Carpenter is speaking out after a moment during her recent Coachella performance sparked a lot of conversation online. The situation happened on April 10 while she was performing on stage.
During her set, Carpenter was sitting at the piano when a fan made a loud, high-pitched celebratory sound from the crowd. The sound caught her off guard, and she reacted in real time. Clips from the show show her looking confused and trying to figure out what she was hearing. At one point, she even wondered out loud if it was a kind of yodeling.
What she did not realize at the time was that the sound was a zaghrouta. This is a traditional form of ululation used in parts of the Middle East and North Africa to celebrate happy moments. When someone in the crowd tried to explain it to her, the exchange felt awkward, and she called the moment “weird,” which quickly spread across social media.

By the next day, Carpenter addressed the situation directly on her social media. She explained that she did not fully understand what was happening in the moment and could not clearly hear or see the fan from the stage.
She wrote, “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and not ill-intended.” She also admitted that she could have responded better and took the chance to learn from the moment. She added, “I could have handled it better!” and shared that she now understands what a zaghrouta is.
She also made it clear that she appreciates learning about different cultures and said she would welcome the sound at future shows. Her response helped calm some of the backlash, as fans saw that she was willing to acknowledge the mistake and move forward.
This moment comes during a very busy time in her career. Carpenter has been gaining a lot of attention recently. Earlier in the week, she released a music video for her song House Tour, which is part of her album Man’s Best Friend.
