‘Sacrifice’ First Trailer Sends Chris Evans Into a Volcanic Hostage Crisis Alongside Anya Taylor-Joy

Netflix has built a reputation for taking creative swings with genre-blending original films, and its latest addition looks poised to be one of the year’s more unpredictable ones. The streamer’s upcoming satirical thriller pairs two of its most bankable stars in a story that mixes celebrity culture commentary with something far stranger lurking beneath the surface.

That story comes from French filmmaker Romain Gavras, best known for ‘Athena,’ marking his English-language directorial debut with a script he co-wrote alongside ‘Succession’ writer Will Arbery. The film was shot across striking locations in Greece, including a volcano in Santorini and a marble quarry in Volakas, giving the project a visually distinct backdrop for its increasingly chaotic story.

Netflix has now released the first trailer for ‘Sacrifice,’ confirming the film will arrive on the platform in the United States and France on October 16. The trailer follows Chris Evans as Mike Tyler, a struggling movie star trying to claw his way back into the spotlight at a star-studded charity gala, only for the night to spiral into a hostage crisis once Anya Taylor-Joy’s character and her followers storm the event.

Taylor-Joy plays Joan, the leader of a group of radical followers convinced they’re destined to fulfill a volcanic prophecy meant to cleanse the earth. Vincent Cassel and Salma Hayek Pinault play the billionaire couple hosting the gala, with the trailer showing Tyler awkwardly navigating a room full of performative wealth before the situation escalates entirely out of his control.

Beyond its central trio, ‘Sacrifice’ brings together an unusually eclectic ensemble, including Ambika Mod, John Malkovich, Swedish rapper Yung Lean, and singer Charli xcx. According to the film’s official press materials, the story “takes aim at celebrity culture, media spectacle, performative activism, and elite hypocrisy,” while also digging into broader questions of faith, conviction and redemption once the hostage situation forces everyone involved to confront what they actually believe.

The film previously premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2025, giving it an early festival run before its wider streaming release later this year. With Taylor-Joy also set to appear in ‘Dune: Part Three’ and Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before the year wraps up, ‘Sacrifice’ slots into an especially busy fall stretch for both actors heading into some of their highest-profile projects yet.

Given the film’s mix of satire, thriller tension and genuinely bizarre premise, ‘Sacrifice’ looks positioned to be one of Netflix’s more talked-about original releases this October.
