Sally Field recently talked about her time working on the 1993 movie Mrs. Doubtfire during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” as reported by Variety.

She said she did not find her co-star Robin Williams funny while they were filming. According to her, she just did not react to his jokes on set, even though other people were laughing around her.

She explained it like this: “Because I would never laugh, ever. And everybody else was laughing and carrying on.”

Williams was known for improvising a lot on set and trying different jokes to get reactions from his co-stars. Field said this became a challenge for him because she stayed serious during takes. She said, “It drove him mad, actually. It wasn’t funny. It just wasn’t funny.”

She also said Williams kept trying new things just to make her laugh, but it did not work at the time. She described it again by saying, “Robin was always trying something different to make me laugh. It was so unfunny. I can’t begin to tell you.”

Field also shared a moment where her reaction was very different when something unexpected happened on set. She said that during a dinner scene with Pierce Brosnan, he made a fart sound with his arm, and that made her laugh immediately. She said, “And I was gone. That was it.”

Mrs. Doubtfire is now seen as one of the most popular comedy films of the 1990s. It follows Williams’ character, a father who disguises himself as a nanny so he can stay close to his children after a divorce. Field played his ex-wife, and Brosnan played her new partner.

Robin Williams died in 2014 at the age of 63. His death was ruled a suicide by asphyxiation, according to officials in Tiburon, California. He is remembered for many films including Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Aladdin, and The Birdcage.
