Sam Heughan Breaks Silence on ‘Outlander’s’ Final Scene and Drops a Huge Hint About the Book Ending
Sam Heughan is finally sharing his thoughts on the emotional ending of Outlander, and according to the actor, even he still has questions about what really happened in the final scene.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heughan opened up about Jamie Fraser’s fate and revealed that he has secretly known the ending of Diana Gabaldon’s final Outlander book since the very beginning of the series.
The final episode of the Starz drama left fans debating whether Jamie and Claire survived or if the two characters ended up together in another realm after the Battle of Kings Mountain. The ending showed Jamie seemingly dying during battle before the story shifted into a more mysterious and spiritual direction.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Heughan admitted that the finale was emotional for him to watch because filming ended more than a year ago. “It’s been a very emotional week,” he said. “It is really one long goodbye. Each character gets their moment, and the final moment itself was definitely a surprise for all of us.”
Jamie spent most of the finale preparing for what looked like his final battle. According to Heughan, the character had already accepted death long before the final episode. He explained that Jamie’s experiences throughout the series changed the way he looked at mortality.
“He says that he’s not afraid to die. He’s just afraid to leave the people that he loves,” Heughan explained. He also said Jamie has always felt connected to something beyond the physical world, especially after everything he went through with Claire.
One of the biggest moments in the finale involved ghost Jamie, which connected directly back to the first season of Outlander. Heughan revealed that bringing back the ghost storyline was something he strongly wanted for the ending.
“That, for me, was key,” he said. “I really wanted to do it.” He added that filming those scenes felt special because he got to revisit Jamie’s original Season 1 look and reconnect with the beginning of the story.
Even now, Heughan says the ending is open to interpretation. He believes fans can decide for themselves whether Jamie and Claire survived or if they moved on together into another world.
“Are they alive in this world or in the next? I’d like to believe that they’re alive together,” he said. He also hinted that Claire’s mysterious healing powers may have played a role in what happened during the finale.

The actor also dropped a major surprise during the interview by confirming that he already knows how Diana Gabaldon plans to end the final Outlander novel, even though the book has not been released yet. According to Heughan, Gabaldon shared the last pages with him and executive producer Maril Davis before Season 1 even started filming.
“Diana sent it to us before we started Season 1,” Heughan revealed. “She sent us the last few pages, so we know the ending.”
Outlander first premiered in 2014 and became one of Starz’s biggest shows. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels, the series followed Claire Fraser, a nurse from the 1940s who mysteriously travels back in time and falls in love with Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser. Over eight seasons, the show mixed romance, war, history, fantasy, and time travel into one of television’s most devoted fan-favorite dramas.
Fans are still waiting for Gabaldon’s final Outlander book, which will officially close the story that began more than three decades ago.
