Sandra Bullock has always chosen roles that push her to the edge, both physically and mentally. In the Netflix thriller Bird Box, she played a single mom trying to survive in a terrifying world.

The role felt personal because Bullock herself is a single parent. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I connected with her fear and determination in a very real way.”

Bullock has a long history of taking on films that explore deeper anxieties. Gravity, for instance, put her alone in space, facing isolation and danger. Premonition, released in 2007, explored the fine line between mental strain and reality. While critics didn’t love Premonition at the time, Bullock believes it remains one of her most intense performances.

In Premonition, she played Linda Hanson, a woman who sees a vision of her husband dying in a car crash. The story moves back and forth in time, showing Linda trying to prevent the tragedy while dealing with a failing marriage. Bullock described filming the movie as mentally exhausting.

She admitted to the director, Mennan Yapo, that she felt like she was losing her mind. He told her, “This is exactly where you need to be,” and she realized the feeling was essential to portray her character’s psychological collapse.

The role demanded constant tension. Bullock explained that inhabiting Linda’s fear of catastrophe was unsettling but necessary. “It’s exhausting to live in that state, but it makes the performance authentic,” she told Variety.

After a short acting break, Bullock is returning with one of her most anticipated films: Practical Magic 2. She will reprise her role as Sally Owens alongside Nicole Kidman. The film, based on Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic and directed by Susanne Bier, will hit theaters on September 11.

Returning stars include Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, with newcomers Joey King and Lee Pace joining the cast. Bullock has also been busy behind the camera with her production company, Fortis Films.

She is developing several new projects that allow her to maintain creative control, saying she only wants to act in stories that truly resonate. “I’m picky now. I want to tell stories that matter,” she stated.

Off-screen, fans have noticed Bullock keeping her life low-key in Los Angeles. She’s preparing for a major promotional tour for Practical Magic 2, but continues to balance her work with personal downtime.

Bullock’s career shows her dedication to roles that challenge her and resonate with audiences, whether in psychological thrillers, space adventures, or magical dramas. She continues to prove that she can combine depth, suspense, and emotional truth in every project she chooses.
