Sauron Returns in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3, and His New Look Changes Everything

Prime Video’s return to Middle-earth has always been treated as a genuine event, and with each new season, the marketing rollout has leaned further into cinematic spectacle. Between record-breaking budgets and sprawling ensemble casts, few fantasy series carry the kind of anticipation this franchise generates with every new chapter.

That anticipation has been building steadily since Season 2 wrapped, with fans eager for any hint of where the story heads next after one of the most consequential finales in the show’s run. Sauron ended that season at the height of his power, and the wait to see what comes after has only intensified in the months since.

Empire Magazine has now given fans their most striking look yet at that next chapter. The publication has officially released the first look image of Sauron, played by Charlie Vickers, for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, alongside new concept art from artist Carlos Huante showing Gandalf facing off against a fearsome Mûmak.

This new imagery marks a clear shift from how Sauron has been presented in previous seasons. The first image shows Sauron wearing Morgoth’s Iron Crown, appearing to have abandoned his Annatar disguise entirely and returning to a darker aesthetic closer to his season one Halbrand appearance. Empire’s caption accompanying the reveal made the tonal shift explicit, simply declaring that the Dark Lord returns.

That transformation lines up directly with where the story is headed narratively. Season two ended with Sauron at his greatest power yet, having claimed the Nine Rings for Men and brought the Orc army under his command, before standing with Fëanor’s hammer in Annatar form to set up the forging of the One Ring.

According to the official synopsis, Season 3 jumps forward several years from the events of Season 2 and takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will, and finally rule all of Middle-earth.

That larger conflict extends well beyond Sauron’s personal arc. Season three will also track the continued fall of Númenor as Pharazôn’s tyrannical ambitions accelerate the island kingdom’s collapse, alongside major turning points in Gandalf’s journey now that the Stranger has finally accepted his true name.

This new reveal arrives against the backdrop of a franchise that has become one of Prime Video’s biggest success stories. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has amassed 185 million viewers since its debut, cementing its place as one of the platform’s most-watched series to date.

That scale of investment has continued behind the scenes as well, with the show remaining one of the most expensive television productions ever made, with its first two seasons alone estimated to have cost Prime Video more than one billion dollars.

Season 3 also welcomes new cast additions, including Jamie Campbell-Bower, Eddie Marsan, and Andrew Richardson, joining returning stars like Charlie Vickers and Morfydd Clark as Galadriel. With production wrapped and marketing now ramping up in earnest, fans finally have concrete details to hold onto after months of speculation.
