Few revivals have leaned into nostalgia as warmly as ‘Scrubs‘. Since the ABC comedy returned in February with Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke back at Sacred Heart, fans have waited to see how the show would handle the unfinished business between its most beloved couple. The question of what really happened with J.D. and Elliot has hovered over the revival from the start.

Season 2 premiered on September 30 with a two-episode launch, and the first season’s mix of comedy and heart carried over into the new run. Aseem Batra is back as showrunner alongside series creator Bill Lawrence, and the cast now includes Ava Bunn as Sam Tosh. The sitcom has settled into Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.

How ‘My Story’ Fools Viewers With a Dinner That Never Happened

The latest episode, titled ‘My Story’, is built around a clever misdirection. For most of its runtime, it appears that J.D. and Elliot, who are now divorced, finally sit down together for a long-awaited dinner. The evening seems to lead to a waterfront walk and a kiss, complete with a Tom Petty song playing behind it.

None of it actually happens. J.D. has fallen asleep while comforting Ms. Croft, a patient with dementia played by Clare Coulter, and the entire romantic evening plays out in his imagination. The issues behind the couple’s split remain exactly where they were.

The Ending Explained: J.D. Wakes Up at Ms. Croft’s Bedside

The final stretch of the episode pays off the dream. Earlier in the story, J.D. leaves a scene rather than staying, but in his imagined version he chooses to stay and watch a movie with his son Ollie, played by Kellan Tetlow. Then Ms. Croft’s voice cuts through the fantasy, and her hallucinations pull J.D. back through the wall to the hospital, where he has been at her bedside all along.

The device gives the writers a way to explore J.D.’s feelings without forcing a direct conversation between the former spouses. It also keeps the audience guessing until the last moment about whether the reunion was real.

What the Imagined Night Reveals About J.D. and Elliot

Inside the dream, the two finally say what they have been holding back. J.D. admits he used to spray perfume on a body pillow and press an ice pack against his legs in her memory, while Elliot confesses she slept with the gym trainer, Cody. Elliot also tells him she would have stood by him through anything and that he should not have shut her out.

Because it all unfolds in J.D.’s mind, the scenes reveal how he believes the marriage fell apart rather than what Elliot actually feels. They also show that he still loves her and may keep that feeling to himself to avoid hurting her and Ollie again.

Sarah Chalke on Where the Story Could Go

Chalke says the idea hooked her because fans have asked for years why the two characters are not together. She explained to Collider that the episode “opens the door in a really interesting way” for whatever comes next.

The actress also noted that the reveal was a technical challenge, since the restaurant and waterfront scenes were filmed on the same day. Michael Spiller directed the episode and reportedly spent weeks preparing for it. Chalke said she hopes a third season is on the way so the story can go further, though she does not know the writers’ long-term plans.

What Comes Next for the Revival

The season is not slowing down. Tamera Mowry-Housley is guest starring as Dr. Steffie, a pediatric doctor who tries to persuade Tosh to choose pediatrics as her specialty, and Scott Foley’s Sean has also arrived at Sacred Heart.

Elliot, meanwhile, has a mobile clinic storyline that continues to shape her path. With the season scheduled to run through December 9, there is plenty of time for the writers to return to the couple’s unresolved feelings.

For now, J.D. and Elliot remain in limbo, and viewers know more about how deeply J.D. feels than Elliot does.
