The 1997 action film Con Air is one of the most memorable movies of the 1990s, famous for its wild story and star-studded cast. Directed by Simon West in his first feature, the film follows a daring prison break on a specially designed transport plane.

Nicolas Cage plays the lead role of Cameron Poe, supported by actors like John Cusack, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. The movie’s over-the-top story didn’t stop it from being a huge hit, earning more than $224 million worldwide.

Despite the success, Con Air drew some harsh criticism, particularly from Cage’s former co-star Sean Penn. The two had worked together decades earlier on Racing with the Moon.

Penn didn’t hold back his opinion on Cage’s move into blockbuster action films. “Nic Cage is no longer an actor,” he said, adding, “He’s more like a performer.” Many took this as a direct jab at Con Air.

Penn went even further in describing what he thought was wrong with Cage’s choices in the industry. “If there’s anything more disgusting in the movie business, it’s the who**dom of my peers.

It’s a guy’s arm coming out of the screen [and] je**g you off,” he said, making it clear he saw Cage’s work in big action films as shallow. Cage responded years later in an interview with The Guardian, saying Penn was paying too much attention to his career.

“He’s paying a little too much attention to my career, I think,” Cage said. He also defended his work, stating that he didn’t see action movies as less artistic. “But what he did say was that I wasn’t an actor, and I can’t agree with that,” he explained. Cage believes acting can be art, no matter the genre.

The debate over whether blockbuster action films can be considered serious cinema continues today. Some critics argue that movies like Con Air are all spectacle and profit, while others point to action films like Die Hard or Mad Max: Fury Road as examples of powerful storytelling.

Cage remains busy with a mix of projects, though this year has been quieter for him. He’s generating buzz for his lead role in Spider-Noir, a live-action Marvel series for Prime Video. He continues to alternate between big-budget hits and daring indie films that keep fans guessing.

Sean Penn has also evolved, earning praise recently for his performance in One Battle After Another. He is currently focusing on directing, with reports saying he is working on a new film starring Tom Hardy.

The tension between Penn’s criticism and Cage’s defense shows how divided opinions can be about what counts as “real” acting. Fans continue to debate the place of movies like Con Air in cinema history, but both actors have proven they can adapt and thrive in different corners of the industry.
