Second Weekend Box Office Projections for Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Are Here — And They Look Epic
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ spent its opening weekend rewriting expectations for what a nearly three-hour, R-rated mythological epic could accomplish at the box office, and that momentum has shown no signs of letting up since. With no major competing releases and virtually every early box office milestone already shattered, industry analysts are now turning their attention to just how strong the film’s second weekend could actually be.
That question has become the biggest storyline in this week’s box office forecasts, with multiple tracking services releasing their own projections ahead of the July 24 to 26 weekend. Given how unusual the film’s weekday performance has already been, expectations for its sophomore frame have climbed well beyond typical industry norms.
Boxoffice Pro’s latest weekend forecast projects ‘The Odyssey’ to gross between $75 million and $85 million domestically in its second weekend, comfortably holding onto the top spot at the box office ahead of both ‘Moana’ and ‘Toy Story 5.’ That range would represent a remarkably soft decline for a film already carrying such a massive opening weekend total.
Other tracking services have landed on similarly bullish numbers. Box Office Theory pegged the film’s second weekend range between $69 million and $81 million, while a separate prediction market analysis found the most common estimate clustering around $80 million to $86 million domestically.
That kind of hold would place ‘The Odyssey’ in genuinely rare company within Nolan’s own filmography. Industry reporting suggests the film has a real chance at surpassing the second weekend performance of both ‘The Dark Knight,’ which earned $75.1 million in its sophomore frame back in 2008, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which posted $62.1 million during its own second weekend in 2012.
Much of that strength traces directly back to the film’s unprecedented weekday performance. ‘The Odyssey’ posted the best domestic Monday total of the entire year at $18.68 million, followed by an even more impressive $21.4 million Tuesday that ranks as Nolan’s personal best and the second highest Tuesday of 2026 behind only ‘Toy Story 5.’
Premium format demand continues to be a major driver behind these numbers. With ‘The Odyssey’ standing as the first film ever shot entirely in IMAX 70mm, the format’s limited availability across only 33 dedicated venues worldwide has created genuine scarcity, pushing eager audiences toward whatever available showtimes and formats they can find.
Industry insiders speaking to TheWrap suggested the film is heavily favored to keep its second weekend decline below 50 percent, and possibly even below 40 percent, an unusually soft hold for any major theatrical release. Fandango’s director of analytics even floated the possibility, however unlikely, that the film’s second weekend could top the $82.4 million opening weekend that ‘Oppenheimer’ posted back in 2023.

With no significant new wide releases competing against it this weekend beyond a limited run for the Broadway musical adaptation ‘Hadestown,’ ‘The Odyssey’ appears set to dominate the box office conversation for at least another week. Given how consistently the film has exceeded projections since its release, even these already bullish forecasts may end up looking conservative once final numbers come in.
