‘Severance’ Stars Discuss Shocking Season 2 Finale and What It Means for the Future
Apple TV+’s psychological thriller Severance delivered a jaw-dropping season 2 finale, answering burning questions while introducing even more mysteries.
The episode, titled “Cold Harbor,” was packed with twists, from revelations about Gemma to the unsettling truth about the goats. Stars Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and Gwendoline Christie break down the episode and what’s next for their characters.
Mark’s Devastating Decision
One of the most shocking moments came when Innie Mark chose to stay inside Lumon with Helly, leaving his Outie, and his newly freed wife, Gemma behind. Speaking on the choice, Scott said, “For Innie Mark, it’s a no-brainer emotionally, but logically, it’s a difficult decision. You have colliding interests within the same body, and eventually, that has to come to a head.“
For viewers, it was heartbreaking to see Gemma left behind just when escape seemed possible. Scott admitted he has mixed feelings, recognizing how tragic the situation is for both Outie Mark and Gemma.
Milchick’s Marching Band Mayhem
Another standout moment was Milchick’s over-the-top dance routine with a full marching band, an unsettling juxtaposition of corporate cheer and sinister control. Lower, who played the trumpet in high school, called the experience “wild,” adding, “This show thrives on surreal moments like this. It’s this radical joy in a dire situation.”
Scott praised Tillman’s performance, saying, “That sequence embodies Severance—so absurd yet so human at the same time.”
The Mystery of the Goats
Lorne was forced to kill one of her beloved goats, revealing that the animals are more significant than they initially seemed. However, the full story remains shrouded in mystery. Scott believes withholding all the answers adds to the intrigue. “People say they want answers, but really, they want hints. And I think this was a satisfying hint,” he explained.
Christie, who bonded with Emil, the young goat on set, joked about wanting to take him home. “I kept saying, ‘I’m so thrilled you’re giving me Emil as my wrap gift.’ No one laughed. Emil has not arrived. I must live with that disappointment.“
Filming the Fight Scene
One of the most intense sequences saw Mark and Lorne battling Drummond in a desperate attempt to escape. Scott called it “thrilling” to fight alongside Christie, praising her dedication. “She puts a thousand percent of herself into everything she does. We were all just trying to keep up with her.“
Christie found the combat scenes creatively fulfilling, calling them one of the most “thrilling endeavors” of her career.
Innie vs. Outie: A Mind-Bending Argument
A pivotal scene featured Innie Mark and Outie Mark communicating via video camera, a complex performance for Scott. “It was the first thing we shot after the strike break—diving into the deep end. I recorded dummy tracks on my phone to play against. It felt silly at times, but you have to push through that fear.“
Favorite Reveals From Season 2
For Lower, the biggest highlight was exploring the personal lives of the Outies. “Seeing Dylan’s family, Irving’s outside life, and Helena’s isolated upbringing added so much depth to their characters,” she said.
With so many jaw-dropping twists and unanswered questions, fans will have to wait to see what comes next for Lumon’s employees. One thing is certain: Severance is only getting more intense from here.
