Sherilyn Fenn was not interested in taking part in one particular Twin Peaks storyline, and years later, fans are finally learning how strongly she felt about it.

According to author Scott Meslow’s book A Place Both Wonderful and Strange: The Extraordinary Untold History of Twin Peaks, the actress immediately pushed back against a beauty pageant plot featured near the end of the show’s original run.

The episode centered around the fictional Miss Twin Peaks competition and brought many of the show’s characters together again after several separate storylines. Characters like Donna Hayward, Shelly Johnson, Lucy Moran, Nadine Hurley, Lana Milford, and Annie Blackburn all joined the contest. Audrey Horne, played by Fenn, was technically part of the pageant too, but her role was kept very small.

Fenn reportedly contacted creator David Lynch as soon as she learned about the storyline. “I called David right away and said, ‘I’m not doing it. No f—ing way,’” she said in Meslow’s book. She made it clear she did not want Audrey walking in a swimsuit or taking part in the pageant in the same way as the other characters.

Instead, Audrey only appeared briefly during the event to deliver a speech. Fenn believed that approach matched Audrey’s personality much better. During the scene, Audrey speaks passionately about protecting things that matter and refusing to stand by while they disappear.

“There is only one way to save a forest, an idea, or anything of value — and that is by refusing to stand by and watch it die,” Audrey says in the episode. “There is a law of nature which is more fundamental to life than the laws of man.”

She finishes the speech by saying, “And that is what I, as Miss Twin Peaks or as Audrey Horne, intend to do.”

Fenn has spoken positively about David Lynch in the past and credited him for shaping Audrey into one of television’s most memorable characters. In a 2014 interview with The A.V. Club, she explained how Lynch added personal touches and instincts to the role that made Audrey feel unique.

“She was defined by David. She was who she was because of him,” Fenn said at the time. She also shared that some of Audrey’s habits and style choices reminded her own family of her real personality.

Twin Peaks originally premiered in 1990 and quickly became one of television’s most talked-about mystery dramas. Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the series followed the investigation into the murder of Laura Palmer in the strange town of Twin Peaks. Over the years, the show built a cult following thanks to its surreal storytelling, unusual humor, and unforgettable characters like Audrey Horne.
