‘Silk: Spider Society’ Canceled at Amazon After Long and Torturous Development

A few days ago, the confirmation that ‘Spider-Man Noir’ show starring Nicholas Cage is moving forward, came. As the studio is reviewing its projects in development, one notable show involving the Spider-Man character however was canceled.

In June 2018, Sony and Amy Pascal initiated development on a film centered around Cindy Moon / Silk, a character portrayed by Tiffany Espensen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film would be distinct from Silk’s appearance in Sony’s animated Spider-Women project.

By late 2019, Silk was considered a strong candidate for a television series, leading to the start of development for the series version, with Pascal remaining as producer. Lauren Moon began writing and developing the series in September 2020. In November 2022, the series was titled “Silk: Spider Society,” with Angela Kang joining to redevelop the series and serve as its showrunner and executive producer alongside Pascal, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller.

Production was halted due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike in May, and as of February 2024, the series was undergoing redevelopment while the writers’ room remained on pause.

The show spent quite a few years being discussed, and now according to Deadline, it’s no longer moving forward with the studio trying to pitch the story to different buyers.

The reasons for cancelation aren’t exactly clear, with some reasons pointing in the direction of the show having a difficult time with the script, going through at least three versions.

The second reason might be because the show was female-oriented, staring female superhero in the main role, and as we all know those types of projects are struggling in recent times, due to several reasons but mostly due to a lack of female support, if we’re going by the audience numbers.
