Sony CEO Tom Rothman Shares a Disappointing Update on the Future of the 'Spider-Man' Franchise

Sony Pictures has scored one of the biggest box office wins in movie history with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ but that success does not mean the studio is moving forward with more Spider-Man spin-off films.

Following the record-breaking opening of the latest Spider-Man movie, many fans expected Sony to reveal new plans for its universe of Marvel characters. Instead, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman offered a much more cautious update, suggesting there are currently no new spin-off projects moving ahead.

Speaking with Variety after the massive launch of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Rothman was asked about the future of Sony’s Marvel character movies. While the studio previously released films centered on characters like Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, Rothman said there are no new projects actively being developed at this time.

“Right now, we don’t know,” Rothman said when asked if Sony plans to continue expanding its Marvel character lineup. He also explained that Sony never viewed those films as part of a larger shared universe.

“We never looked at it as the ‘Sony-Marvel Universe.’ We looked at if there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development.”

The comments mark a disappointing update for fans who were hoping Sony would continue building stories around Spider-Man’s supporting characters. While the Venom trilogy became a major commercial success, several of the studio’s more recent Marvel releases struggled both critically and financially.

During the interview, Rothman was also asked why movies such as ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Madame Web’ failed to connect with audiences. He kept his answer simple and admitted that moviegoers ultimately made the decision. “Ultimately, the audience wasn’t satisfied enough with them,” he said.

Rothman added that it does not matter whether the criticism was fair because the audience has the final say. “The audience is the boss, and they didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that.”

Although the future of the spin-off movies remains uncertain, Rothman sounded much more optimistic about Spider-Man himself. He confirmed there is still a possibility that Tom Holland will return for another film, although nothing has been officially decided.

After being asked if another Spider-Man sequel starring Holland could happen, Rothman answered simply, “Yes.” He also said the studio hopes the actor wants to continue playing Peter Parker in future films.

The interview came after ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ delivered an enormous opening weekend. According to Variety, the film earned $360 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest launches in box office history. The movie also helped create the largest overall weekend ever for theaters alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’

Rothman believes the success proves that audiences still want the theatrical experience despite years of concerns about the future of cinemas.

“What happened is miraculous,” he told Variety. “‘Spider-Man’ is uniting people across cultures and ages. People can piss on theatrical all they want, but that’s one thing that only movies — and movie theaters — can do.”

For now, Sony appears to be focusing on Spider-Man rather than expanding its lineup of Marvel spin-offs. While the door remains open for Tom Holland’s future as Peter Parker, Rothman’s latest comments suggest fans should not expect announcements about new standalone movies featuring Spider-Man’s supporting characters anytime soon.
