Hollywood’s appetite for video game adaptations shows no sign of slowing, and one of the biggest military shooters on the planet is now headed for a big-screen payday. Electronic Arts’ ‘Battlefield‘ franchise has been circling studios for months. Now the live-action ‘Battlefield’ movie appears to have found its likely home.

The package first hit the market in the spring, when it was reported that Christopher McQuarrie would write, direct and produce an adaptation of EA’s series, with Michael B. Jordan producing and possibly starring. McQuarrie and his team pitched studios and streamers including Apple and Sony, with an emphasis on a theatrical release. It set the stage for what insiders described as a fierce competition.

On Oct. 2, TheWrap exclusively reported that Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner and is in talks to land the ‘Battlefield’ package. The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed the news, while Sony declined to comment on negotiations. Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix also submitted bids, in what TheWrap called shaping up to be the biggest bidding war of the year.

The creative team is already set. McQuarrie, who worked on Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies, will write, direct and produce, while Jordan, fresh off his Oscar win for ‘Sinners,’ is attached to produce and potentially star. Producers also include Jesse Stern of Electronic Arts, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.

The timing is no accident. ‘Battlefield 6’ was the best-selling game of 2025 in the United States, and EA says it sold more than 7 million copies in its first 3 days, the biggest launch in the franchise’s history. The game drove EA to record quarterly sales, with the October-December quarter reaching $3 billion in net bookings, up 38% from a year earlier.

That success has revived a series that has been running since 2002. It also reignited an old rivalry. Paramount is developing a ‘Call of Duty’ movie with Peter Berg directing and Taylor Sheridan co-writing, and a 2028 release is planned. A ‘Battlefield’ film could eventually go head-to-head with it at the box office.

For McQuarrie, ‘Battlefield’ is a new mission after seemingly wrapping Tom Cruise’s tenure as Ethan Hunt with ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.’ His large-scale, practical action style would be a natural fit for a franchise known for sprawling warfare. Studios have also noted the importance of theatrical success to Jordan’s ‘Sinners’ win.

Jordan, meanwhile, has been drawn to military action before. He was once attached to a live-action ‘Rainbow Six’ movie after appearing in ‘Without Remorse,’ though that project seems to have stalled. Whether he will lead ‘Battlefield’ remains unconfirmed, and since the games don’t share a single protagonist, it’s unclear who he might play.

Plot details are being kept strictly under wraps, and the film has no release date. Sony hasn’t confirmed a deal, so the studio’s frontrunner status isn’t final until the paperwork is signed. Previous ‘Battlefield’ TV plans at Fox and Paramount stalled, which makes this the franchise’s biggest adaptation move yet.

Still, with a proven director, an Oscar-winning producer and a hit game at its back, the project looks like one of the more promising entries in the video game movie boom.
