‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Push the UK Box Office to Its Best August Since 2018
Record-breaking summers rarely translate the same way across every market, but this particular blockbuster season has proven remarkably consistent on both sides of the Atlantic. What started as a domestic box office phenomenon in the United States has now delivered an equally historic result across the United Kingdom.
The UK box office has spent much of this summer riding the combined momentum of two of the year’s biggest theatrical releases, with both films dominating weekend after weekend since their respective debuts in July. That sustained strength has now translated into one of the strongest single-month totals the UK market has seen in nearly a decade.
According to new figures from Rentrak, the UK box office earned a total of $161.3 million in August, marking the best performance for the month since 2018’s record-breaking total of $201.7 million. That achievement comes courtesy of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” which together anchored the top two spots at the UK box office throughout the entire month.
“The Odyssey,” which released in the UK on July 17, ended August with local earnings of $108.6 million, making it Christopher Nolan’s most successful film on home soil by a considerable margin. The film remained the No. 2 title at the box office even seven weeks into its release, a rare display of staying power for a film that far into its theatrical run.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has performed even more dominantly, holding the No. 1 spot at the UK box office for five consecutive weekends since its July 29 release. The film closed out August with total UK earnings of $126.8 million, putting it on pace to surpass “Spider-Man: No Way Home’s” $131.7 million total and become the highest-grossing Marvel film in UK box office history by the end of September.

The two films haven’t just dominated the UK market in isolation, either. Their combined success has fueled milestone moments across multiple territories throughout the summer, including helping the United States cross the $4 billion domestic box office threshold by August 10, only the second time that benchmark has been reached in the post-pandemic era.
Earlier in their respective runs, the two films also combined to produce the single biggest collective weekend in box office history, generating roughly $430 million across all films in the marketplace during one particularly explosive frame. That result surpassed previous record holders including 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” weekend and 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” opening, underscoring just how unusual this particular box office moment has been.

Part of the films’ sustained success comes down to strong critical and audience reception carrying momentum well past their opening weekends. “Brand New Day” holds a 90 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, positioning the film to keep dominating theaters throughout the late summer stretch rather than fading quickly after its debut.
That combination of critical acclaim and sustained box office performance has allowed both films to maintain their grip on UK theaters for weeks longer than most typical blockbuster releases manage, directly contributing to August’s unusually strong overall total. With both films still actively playing in UK theaters as September begins, their combined box office totals show little sign of slowing down just yet.
