‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Trailer Leaks Online, and Chris Miller Isn’t Happy About It

The ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise has had a famously bumpy road to its finale, weathering years of delays, rumors, and shifting release windows since ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ left fans on a cliffhanger back in 2023. Now, just as anticipation for the trilogy’s conclusion was finally building steam again, the film has run into a very different kind of setback.

Sony’s animated Spider-Man franchise has long been protective of its footage, carefully controlling every reveal and teaser tied to the series. That level of control took a hit this week when unauthorized footage from the long-awaited third installment made its way online without the studio’s blessing.

The trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 18, 2027, appeared to leak online on X this week, spreading rapidly across the platform and racking up millions of views before Sony could contain it.

Co-writer and producer Christopher Miller addressed the leak directly on Friday, making his frustration clear without mincing words. He wrote on social media that he wasn’t a fan of leaks involving footage that hadn’t been finished or fully rendered.

The leaked material reportedly runs about four minutes and 40 seconds, opening with the closing moments of ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ as Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, is confronted by both his Uncle Aaron and an alternate-reality version of himself. According to reports on the leaked content, the footage also includes glimpses of action sequences and reunions with Gwen and Miles’ parents toward its final minute, though it remains unclear whether this reflects anything close to what Sony’s official trailer will ultimately look like.

Fans who watched the leaked clips were divided in their reactions, with some expressing disappointment that the animation style didn’t look as polished as what audiences have come to expect from the franchise’s Oscar-winning visual style. That reaction lines up with Miller’s own explanation that the footage was never meant to be seen in its current, unfinished state.

This isn’t an isolated incident for Hollywood this year. Just weeks earlier, both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ two billion-dollar blockbusters, suffered similar leaks onto X following their theatrical releases.

Earlier in the year, an even more serious breach occurred when the full version of ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ leaked online months ahead of its planned Paramount+ streaming release. That incident led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man in Singapore, who was accused of illegally accessing a media server to leak the film.

Cast members from that project later spoke out publicly against the breach, urging fans not to watch the unauthorized version. Star Eric Nam reflected on the importance of respecting the years of work poured into a project by its creators, framing proper viewing as a genuine show of appreciation for the art form, comments he shared with Variety at Comic-Con following that earlier leak.

For ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ specifically, this latest leak arrives after a development period marked by repeated delays and swirling rumors about the project’s status. Miller has previously had to push back publicly on claims that Sony had scrapped major portions of the film, insisting as recently as last year that nothing had been thrown out and that production was moving forward steadily.

With the film’s official release still nearly a year away, Sony now faces the challenge of managing fan expectations shaped by unfinished, leaked footage rather than the polished vision the studio intended to unveil on its own terms.

Given the franchise’s track record of course-correcting through delays to protect its reputation, it wouldn’t be surprising if this leak only reinforces the studio’s resolve to keep the wraps tightly sealed until everything is ready.
