‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Tom Holland Just Revealed Marvel Has a Secret Plan for Miles Morales, and It’s Already in Motion

Miles Morales has spent years as one of the most requested characters fans want to see make the jump from page and pixel to live-action Marvel cinema. Between his star turn in Sony’s animated Spider-Verse trilogy and his massive popularity in video games, the character has built exactly the kind of following that makes his continued absence from live-action feel increasingly conspicuous.

Tom Holland has been dropping hints about that eventual crossover for months now, speaking with growing specificity about his own role in helping bring the character to the MCU. What started as vague expressions of hope has steadily evolved into something considerably more concrete as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has made its way through the press circuit.

That evolution reached a new peak recently, when Holland confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Marvel Studios and Sony have been actively mapping out a detailed plan to introduce Miles Morales and eventually transition the Spider-Man mantle, one that’s reportedly been in development since ‘No Way Home’ wrapped back in 2021.

Speaking with host Josh Horowitz, Holland said the plan has been laid out for years and that it’s going to keep changing, but that he has a clear vision for passing the baton and gets genuinely excited whenever those conversations happen.

That timeline lines up with comments Holland made earlier this summer during the film’s broader promotional run. Speaking to Hobby Consolas, Holland explained that the studios are keeping an open mind about what the future looks like, adding that bringing Miles Morales into the universe is something he feels strongly about and is actively working toward, however that ultimately comes together.

Part of what’s driving Holland’s investment in the idea traces back to his own origin story within the franchise. He’s credited Robert Downey Jr. with shepherding him into the MCU when he first debuted as Peter Parker in 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ and he’s said he wants to return that same mentorship to whoever eventually inherits the role, whether that ends up being Miles Morales or another character entirely.

There’s a clear complication standing between Holland’s enthusiasm and an actual on-screen debut, though. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously revealed that Sony corporate leadership explicitly told Marvel to hold off on introducing a live-action Miles Morales until the animated Spider-Verse trilogy wraps its run.

That constraint puts a natural timeline on things given Sony’s release plans. With ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ set to arrive on June 18, 2027, some reporting has floated ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as a plausible landing spot for Miles once the animated trilogy has concluded, though nothing has been officially confirmed by either studio.

Holland’s own contract situation adds another layer of intrigue to the timing. Reports differ on whether his current deal runs through his ‘Secret Wars’ obligations in 2027 or extends across a full second trilogy beginning with ‘Brand New Day,’ but either way, his repeated public comments about legacy and succession throughout this press cycle suggest the topic is very much on his mind.

For a franchise that’s spent years teasing the idea without much concrete follow-through, Holland’s latest comments mark the clearest confirmation yet that something is actually in motion behind the scenes. Whether that plan puts Miles Morales onscreen in the next Avengers film or somewhere further down the road, fans finally have reason to believe the wait might actually be worth it.
