‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton Signs Major New Overall Deal With Sony Pictures

Destin Daniel Cretton has spent the past several years quietly building one of the more impressive résumés in modern blockbuster filmmaking, moving from acclaimed indie dramas into the highest tiers of franchise filmmaking. His trajectory took a massive leap forward earlier this year with the release of his latest Marvel collaboration, a film that’s since rewritten the record books.

That success has clearly not gone unnoticed by the studios eager to keep him in their orbit. With his stock at an all-time high following one of the biggest box office runs in recent memory, Sony Pictures has now moved to formally deepen its relationship with the filmmaker.

Destin Daniel Cretton has signed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures, according to an exclusive report. The deal comes on the heels of Cretton’s work directing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which has become the highest-grossing domestic release of all time and the third highest-grossing film worldwide.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cretton will develop films to produce through his own production company, Hisako Films, working alongside the company’s president, Jeyun Munford. Notably, the pact itself does not cover directing duties specifically, though Sony is reportedly very eager to bring Cretton back into the director’s chair for a potential ‘Brand New Day’ follow-up.

That distinction matters given how packed Cretton’s directing schedule already appears. Any studio hoping to secure his services next in line behind Lionsgate, where his next directing effort will be a live-action adaptation of the popular manga ‘Naruto,’ currently scheduled to begin shooting early next year.

Beyond his record-breaking work on ‘Brand New Day,’ Cretton’s 2026 has also included the debut of ‘Wonder Man,’ the Marvel series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley that earned widespread praise along with an Emmy nomination for Abdul-Mateen. Cretton co-created, directed, and executive-produced that series, adding another significant credit to an already stacked year.

His broader Marvel history also includes directing and co-writing ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ along with executive producing and directing episodes of the Disney+ adaptation of ‘American Born Chinese.’ Beyond his franchise work, Cretton’s filmography includes acclaimed features like ‘Short Term 12,’ ‘The Glass Castle,’ starring Brie Larson and Woody Harrelson, and ‘Just Mercy,’ starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx.

Speaking previously about the film’s record-breaking box office run, Cretton reflected on just how surreal the experience has been. “Pretty crazy,” Cretton said when asked how he was processing the film’s box office trajectory, in an interview with Deadline shortly after the film crossed the billion-dollar mark worldwide.

Cretton also touched on the emotional core he built the film around, revealing that his creative north star emerged during the first dramatic scene shot with star Tom Holland, involving Peter Parker bringing flowers to Aunt May’s grave. That grounded emotional approach appears to have resonated strongly with both audiences and Sony executives alike, based on the studio’s clear eagerness to keep him closely involved with the franchise moving forward.

While the new overall deal doesn’t guarantee Cretton’s return to the director’s chair for a follow-up, Sony’s enthusiasm signals just how central he’s become to the studio’s vision for the franchise going forward. Given the unprecedented success of ‘Brand New Day,’ it would be a significant surprise if Sony didn’t eventually find a way to bring him back behind the camera for another installment.

With Cretton now formally locked into a broader producing relationship with the studio, expect his fingerprints to extend well beyond just Spider-Man in the years ahead.
