Destin Daniel Cretton Reveals Marvel Didn’t Force Hulk Into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ spent months building buzz for one specific crossover: Tom Holland’s web-slinger sharing the screen with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk for the first time in a solo Spider-Man film. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has spoken at length about the pairing since the movie hit theaters, describing the on-set chemistry between his two leads as something that came together with surprising ease.

That collaboration has fueled plenty of speculation about how much creative control Cretton actually had over which characters landed in his movie, especially given Marvel’s reputation for carefully coordinating crossovers across its sprawling cinematic universe. Fans have wondered whether decisions like bringing in the Hulk came from the top down or bubbled up from Cretton’s own vision for the film.

According to Cretton himself, the answer leans firmly toward the latter. Speaking in an interview , the director explained that including the Hulk was not a mandate handed down from Marvel, but something his team had to actively request and get approval for from Kevin Feige.

Cretton described the process as one where the story dictates which characters get pulled in, rather than the studio pushing specific heroes onto a director’s plate. He explained that once his team knows which character they want, they have to bring the idea to Feige and ask whether it can actually happen, a dynamic he said applied just as much to the Hulk’s involvement as it did to other characters considered during development.

That framing lines up with how Cretton has talked about the writers’ room process elsewhere. He’s previously described a wall covered in potential characters, treating the challenge less as filling a mandated checklist and more as letting the story naturally point toward who belongs in it.

The Hulk’s inclusion ended up becoming one of the film’s most talked-about elements once audiences got a look at the finished product. Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner appears in the movie sporting a notably different, greyer look than fans are used to, sparking online debate over whether the change nods to the Joe Fixit persona from the comics or reflects something psychological going on with the character.

Cretton has also spoken about what it was like directing scenes between Holland and Ruffalo, calling their dynamic together explosive and surprisingly intimate once cameras started rolling. He’s credited both actors with bringing life to their scenes through improvisation, even amid the technical demands of shooting heavily visual-effects-driven sequences.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ marks Cretton’s third Marvel Studios project in five years, following his work on ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ He originally signed on to direct what eventually became ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before stepping away from that project and landing on Spider-Man instead, a transition he’s said came together smoothly thanks to his ongoing relationship with Feige.

The film has performed enormously well since its July 31 release, and Cretton has continued doing press rounds discussing everything from the writers’ room process to how the movie fits into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Ruffalo’s future as the Hulk has also become a talking point during these interviews, with Cretton previously indicating that the actor still has ideas for a potential solo Hulk film he’d like to pursue.

For now, though, the takeaway from Cretton’s latest comments is clear: even with a character as recognizable as the Hulk, Marvel isn’t simply assigning heroes to directors. It’s still up to filmmakers like Cretton to make the case for who belongs in their story, and to actually go ask for it.
