Marvel’s biggest release of the summer has found itself dealing with an unexpected problem outside the theater. While fans are showing up in huge numbers to watch ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ on the big screen, the movie was also caught up in a major online leak after an unauthorized recording appeared on social media.

A high-quality bootleg version of the film was uploaded to X by an account named Fredrick Bryan early Friday morning. The post quickly gained millions of views before it was removed later the same day.

The leaked video reportedly reached around 5.9 million accounts before being taken down, with more than 143,000 likes and over 10,000 reposts recorded during the time it was available. Several other accounts also attempted to share copies of the footage, but those posts were removed as copyright enforcement efforts continued.

Sony, the studio behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ did not comment on the situation.

Movie leaks have become a recurring challenge for major studios, especially when highly anticipated releases arrive in theaters. Even with copyright protection systems and takedown requests in place, popular films can spread quickly online before platforms are able to remove unauthorized uploads.

The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ leak follows another recent high-profile incident involving Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’ That film also appeared online through an unauthorized upload, with Variety reporting that the footage gained millions of views before being removed. Universal responded to that incident by saying, “We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”

Despite the leak, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to perform strongly at the box office. The film opened with a record-breaking preview performance, earning $72 million from early screenings and setting a new record above ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous preview total of $60 million.

The strong theater response shows that many fans are still choosing to experience the movie the way it was intended, on the big screen. The latest Spider-Man adventure brings back Tom Holland as Peter Parker, with Zendaya returning as MJ. The cast also features Sadie Sink in a mystery role, along with Jon Bernthal and Jacob Batalon.

For studios, the situation highlights the ongoing battle between huge online audiences and protecting major releases from piracy. While leaks can create headlines, the long-term impact on a film’s success is difficult to measure, especially when a movie already has strong audience interest.

For now, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ remains one of the biggest theatrical events of the year, with Marvel and Sony continuing to focus on the film’s box office performance rather than the brief online leak.
