‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Become the Highest-Grossing Movie in Domestic Box Office History

Blockbuster box office runs rarely maintain momentum for more than a few weeks before ticket sales start to taper off, but Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man outing has refused to follow that pattern. Since launching on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent nearly two months rewriting the domestic box office record books one milestone at a time.

The film’s historic run began with a $360 million opening weekend that surpassed ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the biggest domestic debut ever, and the records kept coming from there. It became the fastest movie in history to cross $700 million, then $800 million, and eventually became just the second film ever to pass $900 million domestically, trailing only 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in that exclusive club.

Now the film is on the verge of claiming the biggest record of all. As of this weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ had climbed to a domestic total of roughly $935.9 million, putting it within touching distance of ‘The Force Awakens’ all-time domestic record of $936,662,225. Given the film’s consistent daily hauls, industry watchers widely expect it to officially claim the record within the next day or so.

That timing matters because ‘The Force Awakens’ final tally wasn’t locked in immediately after its initial theatrical run. The 2015 Star Wars film actually added roughly $500,000 to its total during a 2016 re-release, meaning ‘Brand New Day’ needs to clear that adjusted number rather than just its original reported box office run to fully claim the all-time crown.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held the domestic box office record since its release under Disney and Lucasfilm, a run that lasted nearly ten years without a serious challenger. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ came close in 2019 with $858.3 million, but even that Marvel Studios juggernaut ultimately fell short of touching Star Wars’ benchmark, until ‘Brand New Day’ quietly passed it as well earlier this month.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and led once again by Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ has also been racking up records on the global stage, having already crossed $2 billion worldwide to become Sony’s highest-grossing release of all time. With a “Certified Fresh” 90 percent critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s box office momentum has been matched by strong reception from both critics and moviegoers alike.

Once ‘Brand New Day’ officially surpasses ‘The Force Awakens,’ it will sit alone at the top of the all-time domestic chart, a distinction that, given the sheer gap between it and the films below it, could realistically hold for years to come. For a franchise many assumed had already peaked with ‘No Way Home,’ this latest chapter has proven there was still plenty of room left to swing higher.
