‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Painfully Close to Becoming the Biggest Domestic Movie Ever

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has held onto the title of highest-grossing domestic release in movie history for more than a decade, a record that has survived an entire era of Marvel tentpoles, animated blockbusters, and franchise reboots without ever being seriously threatened. That kind of longevity made the record feel almost permanent.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent its entire theatrical run quietly dismantling that assumption. The film opened with a record-setting $360 million domestic weekend, crossed $2 billion globally faster than nearly any film in history, and held the top spot at the North American box office for six consecutive weekends before finally slipping to second place behind a new release.

That weekend haul pushed ‘Brand New Day’s’ domestic cume to $935.2 million, leaving it just $1.4 million short of ‘The Force Awakens’s’ all-time record of $936.6 million. Perhaps more strikingly, the film now sits $111 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ stood at the same point in its own run, despite having started that comparison just $3 million ahead of the 2019 Marvel epic.

With the weekend gross falling just short of the milestone, the record-breaking moment is now expected to arrive early in the week, likely by Tuesday at the latest, based on the film’s current daily pace. Once it clears that final stretch, ‘Brand New Day’ will become the first film to unseat ‘The Force Awakens’ as the biggest domestic release in box office history, a record that had felt nearly untouchable for years.

Industry trackers are now eyeing a final domestic run somewhere around $960 million for ‘Brand New Day,’ a total that would give the film a comfortable cushion above ‘The Force Awakens’s’ mark once its theatrical window finally closes. The film has also maintained an A CinemaScore rating from opening weekend audiences, a grade that speaks to the kind of sustained word-of-mouth that has helped keep ticket sales strong well past the point where most blockbusters typically start fading.

That combination of critical goodwill, audience enthusiasm, and consistent weekly holds has made ‘Brand New Day’s’ pursuit of the domestic record feel less like a long shot and more like an inevitability these past several weeks. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and led by Tom Holland in his fourth solo outing as the character, the film has managed to top a franchise entry many assumed would be nearly impossible to follow given the sprawling scale of 2021’s ‘No Way Home.’

For a film already sitting among the handful of highest-grossing releases in history worldwide, closing out its domestic run atop the all-time chart would be a fitting final chapter to an already historic theatrical run.
