‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Become the Third-Biggest Movie Ever as Its Historic Reign Continues
Box office records don’t fall very often anymore, but ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent the better part of the summer making a habit of it. Since its record-shattering debut, Tom Holland’s latest outing as the wall-crawler has refused to slow down, week after week defying the typical patterns of blockbuster decay.
Sony’s release opened to a staggering $355 million domestically and $932 million globally, the biggest opening weekend in box office history, and it hasn’t stopped climbing since. Even its holds have been extraordinary, with the film posting the third-biggest second weekend of all time and continuing to dominate through its fourth frame with $39 million domestically, already ranking as the third-highest grossing movie in history worldwide.
Now, the film is on track to extend that reign even further. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is tracking to remain the number one movie both domestically and globally for a fifth consecutive weekend, adding an estimated $23,000,000 to $26,000,000 in North America and another $45,000,000 to $50,000,000 overseas.
That kind of weekend total would be enough to push the film past both ‘Ne Zha 2’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ making it the third-biggest movie in box office history worldwide. Currently, only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion sit ahead of it on the all-time global chart.
Given how quickly the film has been climbing, box office analysts have started wondering whether it might eventually challenge those two juggernauts directly for the top spot, or at the very least become the first film ever to reach $1 billion at the domestic box office alone. ‘The Force Awakens’ currently holds the domestic record at $936.6 million, a mark that ‘Brand New Day’ appears increasingly likely to surpass given its unprecedented staying power.
The film’s competition hasn’t been able to slow its momentum either. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has remained a strong secondary draw throughout the summer, recently crossing $500 million domestically in its own fifth weekend, but it has consistently trailed Spider-Man at the top of the charts since both films hit theaters.
Sony and Marvel’s collaboration has already made history multiple times over during this run, with the franchise now boasting the four biggest worldwide opening weekends of all time between this film, ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ That kind of dominance across the industry’s biggest benchmarks speaks to just how thoroughly this film has captured audiences.
With five consecutive weekends at number one now within reach both domestically and globally, ‘Brand New Day’ is proving that audiences still show up in massive numbers for the right blockbuster, even in a summer already crowded with major releases. Whatever happens from here, this film has already cemented itself as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
