‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Officially Dethrones ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the Second-Biggest Movie at the Domestic Box Office
Marvel Studios has spent years chasing the kind of unstoppable box office momentum it enjoyed before the pandemic reshaped moviegoing, and for most of that stretch, one benchmark remained stubbornly out of reach. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has stood as the gold standard of Marvel box office dominance since 2019, a film whose numbers seemed built to last for a generation.
That reign has been steadily chipped away all summer by an unlikely challenger from within Marvel’s own ranks. Tom Holland’s latest solo outing arrived with record-breaking hype back in late July, and rather than fading after a strong debut, it kept adding tens of millions of dollars to its total nearly every week that followed.
That momentum has now officially culminated in a genuine changing of the guard. According to Deadline, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has become the second highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $858.3 million lifetime total with a new figure of $858.4 million. The film crossed that threshold after adding another $3.4 million during its fourth Monday in theaters, a remarkably steady pace for a film already a month into its run.
That achievement places ‘Brand New Day’ behind only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which still holds the all-time domestic record at $936.6 million. With the film continuing to perform well into its fifth weekend, industry trackers now expect it to push toward $900 million domestically, putting it within striking distance of becoming just the second film ever to approach that near-billion-dollar threshold in North America alone.

‘Brand New Day’s’ path to this milestone began the moment it hit theaters. The film opened to $360 million domestically, officially surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ previous all-time opening weekend record of $357.1 million, and went on to become the fastest movie ever to cross $500 million domestically, hitting that mark in just seven days compared to Endgame’s eight.
Globally, the film has continued climbing the charts as well, recently crossing $2 billion worldwide in just seventeen days, making it the second-fastest movie in history to hit that mark behind only Endgame’s eleven-day pace. Starring Holland alongside Zendaya and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film currently holds a 90 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even stronger 98 percent audience rating, numbers that help explain why its box office legs have stayed so strong week after week.
Despite this domestic milestone, Endgame’s global crown remains firmly intact for now. The 2019 Avengers finale still holds a commanding lead worldwide with its $2.799 billion lifetime total, compared to Brand New Day’s current $2.22 billion, meaning Spider-Man would need to add roughly another half billion dollars internationally to fully dethrone Endgame on the global stage.
Adding an extra layer of irony to the timing, Disney is set to re-release ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in theaters on Sept. 25 under the title ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ a rollout that could theoretically pad Endgame’s own domestic total right as Spider-Man tries to widen its lead. Whether that re-release meaningfully affects the ongoing rivalry between the two films remains to be seen, but the symbolism of the timing hasn’t gone unnoticed among box office watchers.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ now looming as Marvel’s next major test this December, ‘Brand New Day’s’ historic run raises real questions about whether Spider-Man has quietly become the studio’s most reliable box office draw.
Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day eventually surpass Avengers: Endgame worldwide?
