‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Do Something No Marvel Movie Has Ever Pulled Off

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent its entire theatrical run defying expectations, and six weekends into its release, that momentum shows no signs of slowing down. What started as a strong opening has turned into one of the most historically significant box office runs in recent memory, with the film continuing to dominate an increasingly quiet late-summer marketplace.

The film held onto the number one spot at the domestic box office for a sixth consecutive weekend, earning $18 million over the traditional three-day frame and an estimated $23.3 million across the extended Labor Day holiday. That marks the longest stretch atop the charts since 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ which spent seven straight weekends at number one, putting Sony’s Marvel sequel within reach of matching one of the more impressive recent staying-power records in the industry.

With its domestic total now sitting at $918 million, ‘Brand New Day’ is closing in fast on ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which has held the all-time unadjusted domestic box office record of $936 million since 2015. Industry trackers now consider it all but certain that the film will overtake that record within the next week, officially making it the highest-grossing movie of all time domestically.

That climb is even more notable given the film’s consistency. The sixth-weekend drop of roughly 19 to 20 percent from the previous frame is remarkably mild for a film this deep into its release, especially considering it lost 158 theaters heading into the weekend. According to Variety, that decline compares favorably against other historic holdovers, including ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ steeper drop at a similar point in its run.

Internationally, ‘Brand New Day’ has now crossed $2.4 billion worldwide, positioning it as the third-highest-grossing film in cinema history behind only ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion. While the film isn’t expected to threaten those two titles for the worldwide crown, its trajectory toward the domestic record alone represents a milestone few films ever reach.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film, starring Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and a sprawling ensemble cast, opened with the biggest domestic debut in box office history at $360 million, a number that already surpassed ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous opening weekend record. That launch set the tone for a run that’s continued breaking records at nearly every major milestone along the way.

The film’s dominance has also coincided with a historically strong summer season overall. Domestic ticket sales from May through early September reached approximately $4.73 billion, making 2026 the second-biggest summer box office season on record when figures aren’t adjusted for inflation, trailing only the $4.755 billion total from 2013.

Other releases have struggled to make a dent in ‘Brand New Day’s’ hold on the marketplace. Adam Wingard’s ‘Onslaught,’ starring Adria Arjona, debuted in 13th place with just $1.8 million domestically over the weekend, hampered by a “C” CinemaScore grade and a 54 percent Rotten Tomatoes score that don’t bode well for its longevity in theaters.

With the domestic record now within striking distance and momentum still holding strong heading into the fall, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ looks set to close out its theatrical run as one of the defining box office stories of the decade. Whether it can also mount a serious challenge toward the billion-dollar domestic threshold remains to be seen, but for now, the film continues rewriting box office history one weekend at a time.
