‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Barreling Toward $1 Billion Overseas Alone, Here’s Why
Sony and Marvel have been on an absolute tear this summer, and their latest Spider-Man outing shows no signs of slowing down. What started as a record-shattering opening weekend has turned into one of the fastest climbs to blockbuster status in box office history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ launched with a mind-boggling $355 million domestic debut and $573 million internationally for a combined $927 million opening weekend, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in global launch numbers. Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as the web-slinger hasn’t let up since, racking up records at a pace that has stunned even seasoned box office analysts.
The international rollout has been especially striking given China’s role in the film’s success. China led all overseas markets with a $121.0 million opening, marking the biggest post-COVID launch for a Marvel movie in the country and a massive turnaround given that the previous installment, ‘No Way Home’, never even released there. That single market has helped push the film’s total international haul well past $700 million just over a week into release, putting a billion-dollar overseas total firmly within reach in the coming days.
Overall, ‘Brand New Day’ crossed the $1 billion mark globally in just six days, making it the second-fastest film ever to hit that milestone, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which reached the same benchmark in five days back in 2019. By its seventh day in theaters, the film had already climbed to $1.155 billion worldwide, including $449 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally, officially supplanting ‘Toy Story 5’ as the highest-grossing movie of the year.
That international tally alone underscores just how quickly the film is closing in on the $1 billion overseas threshold on its own. With China contributing such an outsized share of that total and other major markets like the United Kingdom, Mexico, and South Korea also posting record or near-record openings, the film’s overseas trajectory shows little sign of slowing as it heads into its second weekend.
Beyond the raw grosses, ‘Brand New Day’ has methodically dismantled a string of box office benchmarks along the way. It set the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in history with $360 million, edging out ‘Endgame’s previous mark of $357.1 million, and became the fastest film ever to surpass $400 million domestically, doing so in just four days.

The film has also delivered the highest-grossing Monday in box office history with $47 million, beating a record previously held by ‘Black Panther’, along with the biggest Tuesday ever at the domestic box office with $42 million. With such staying power and an expanding international footprint, industry analysts now expect the film to eventually cross $2 billion globally before its theatrical run wraps, a feat only seven movies in history have ever achieved.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman captured the scale of the moment succinctly during opening weekend, quipping, “So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has similarly credited the film’s success to Spider-Man’s enduring appeal and Holland’s continued connection with audiences after four films in the role.
With China still climbing and international audiences showing no signs of fatigue, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ looks set to be one of the defining box office stories of the year.
Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day cross $2 billion worldwide?
