‘Batman: Knightfall’ Sequel Clip Drops as Azrael Prepares to Take Over Gotham
Few Batman stories hit as hard as the one where the Caped Crusader gets broken. The ‘Knightfall’ saga has been a fan obsession since the early 1990s, and DC’s animated team is finally giving it the big-screen treatment, one chapter at a time.
The comics ran from April 1993 to August 1994 and unfolded in 3 parts: ‘Knightfall’, ‘Knightquest’ and ‘KnightsEnd’. Bane broke Batman’s back, and a new, more unstable and violent Batman took his place. Modern audiences may know the broad strokes from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, but this trilogy marks the first time the comics have been adapted directly on film.
Now the second chapter has its first clip. The 1 minute 54 second preview, debuted through IGN, drops viewers into a dark Gotham street where an ambulance with flashing lights idles near an intersection while a rider in a dark blue suit crouches low on a motorcycle. The film is set to arrive in December.
The release picture has a few moving parts. Digital and on-demand availability is listed for December 8, while the 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray editions are scheduled for December 15. Earlier coverage said no date had been announced, so the dates are worth confirming with Warner Bros. as the release gets closer.

The first trailer for the sequel arrived timed to Batman Day, and the story picks up after Batman and Bane’s brutal fight, which leaves Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down. Bane then declares dominion over Gotham City and releases many of Batman’s greatest villains back into the public. With Bruce unable to continue, a successor must take the cowl.
That successor is Jean-Paul Valley, the religiously zealous vigilante known as Azrael, a choice that comes as a shock to Nightwing and Robin. The trailer shows Azrael dishing out ruthless, violent justice, first in Batman’s traditional cape and cowl and then in a suit of Batman armor. The big question the film asks is whether his more violent methods can stop Bane.
Anson Mount returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with Michael Mando as Bane and Pablo Schreiber as Azrael. Jack Griffo voices Tim Drake as Robin, Bruce Boxleitner is Commissioner Gordon, and Simon Templeman plays Alfred Pennyworth.
The villain roster is stacked as well. David Dastmalchian voices the Riddler, Jason Flemyng is the Mad Hatter, Andrew Morgado plays Victor Zsasz, and Luis Bermudez voices Catman. Max Mittelman is credited as Jason Todd, and Toks Olagundoye plays Shondra Kinsolving, while the actor voicing Nightwing has not been announced.
Jeff Wamester directs from a screenplay by Jeremy Adams, the same pairing behind the first film. Jim Krieg, Kimberly S. Moreau, Sam Register and Michael Uslan produce. The movie carries an R rating, a signal that the studio intends to keep the story as brutal as the comics.

The first chapter, ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall’, premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Variety’s review reported that the crowd applauded, and then reached digital on August 25. The film runs 79 minutes. It holds a 92% critics score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and some reviewers called it the best animated Batman film since ‘Batman: Mask of the Phantasm’.
Not everyone was as glowing. DiscussingFilm called it a sluggish start to the trilogy, and CBR’s review was more measured, saying the film effectively sets up the chain of events even if it could have started stronger. That mix of praise and reservations makes the sequel’s job clear: deliver the payoff that the opening chapter sets up.
The trilogy is not finished yet. The third film, ‘KnightsEnd’, is expected in early 2027, which would close out the adaptation of the original three-part saga.
For now, the focus is on how well Azrael’s turn as Batman plays out. The clip offers only a small taste, and the film’s R rating and the trailer’s violent imagery suggest the story will lean into the darker side of the storyline.
Are you excited to see Azrael take over as Batman in Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest?
