‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Officially 2026’s Highest-Grossing Movie, and It Left ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Michael’ in the Dust

This year’s box office has already produced more billion-dollar blockbusters than Hollywood has seen since before the pandemic reshaped the entire theatrical landscape. That kind of momentum has made 2026 feel like a genuine return to form for movie theaters, with one hit after another quietly stacking up record-breaking numbers throughout the summer.

Even against that backdrop of consistent success, nothing quite prepared the industry for what happened once Tom Holland’s latest outing as the web-slinger hit theaters. What started as an already-strong opening weekend has since snowballed into something that’s now redefining the entire year’s box office hierarchy.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is already the highest-grossing film of 2026 globally, having rocketed past every other release this year in a matter of days. The film opened to a record-breaking $927 million globally, the second-largest worldwide debut of all time behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and crossed the $1 billion mark within just six days of release, becoming the second-fastest film in history to reach that milestone.

That explosive trajectory has allowed ‘Brand New Day’ to blow past two of the year’s previous box office leaders in rapid succession. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ also starring Holland, had been riding high with a global haul surpassing $911 million after three weekends in theaters, a genuinely massive number on its own that helped push distributor Universal past $4 billion at the worldwide box office for the year. But ‘Brand New Day”s six-day sprint to $1 billion simply outpaced that longer, steadier climb.

The film also leapfrogged ‘Michael,’ the Lionsgate and Universal-shared biopic that had spent months as one of 2026’s top earners with a worldwide total north of $1 billion. Alongside ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘Michael’ had helped anchor what was already shaping up to be one of the strongest box office years since 2019, before ‘Brand New Day’ arrived and reshuffled the entire leaderboard practically overnight.

What makes the achievement even more striking is that ‘Brand New Day’ pulled off this run without any IMAX screens domestically, since that premium format had already been locked in for ‘The Odyssey”s exclusive three-week window. Despite that handicap, the film still shattered records across nearly every other premium format, including the biggest global opening ever for ScreenX and 4DX combined, and the highest-grossing Dolby Cinema opening weekend in history.

Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, framed the achievement within the broader context of an already historic year for theaters. He noted that with ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ having each already crossed the billion-dollar threshold, this summer alone was on pace to help push 2026 toward being the highest-grossing year at the box office since 2019.

With China’s strong opening performance already fueling speculation that ‘Brand New Day’ could eventually clear $2 billion worldwide, a milestone only seven films in history have ever reached, the film’s grip on the top of this year’s box office charts shows no signs of loosening anytime soon. For a franchise many assumed had already peaked with ‘No Way Home,’ this latest chapter has proven there was still plenty of room to climb even higher.
