Few movie sets have drawn as much attention this fall as Sydney Sweeney’s ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’. The follow-up to last year’s hit thriller has been photographed in public almost daily, with fans tracking every costume, cast member and street corner. The latest batch of photos comes from Manhattan, where production has now moved after weeks of shooting in New Jersey.

The first ‘The Housemaid’ was released in December 2025 and went on to gross more than $400 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. Directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden’s novels, it turned Sweeney’s troubled housekeeper Millie Calloway into a franchise lead. Lionsgate quickly set a sequel in motion, and production officially began in October, with filming planned across New York City and New Jersey this fall.

Among the newcomers photographed on set is Stephen Kalyn, best known for playing Dean Di Laurentis in Prime Video’s ‘Off Campus’. And in the newest photos, Sweeney and Kalyn are seen kissing while filming a scene on a Manhattan street. In one shot, the pair embrace in the middle of the sidewalk, and in another, Kalyn gestures toward Sweeney while standing near a subway entrance.

Before anyone reads too much into the pictures, the context matters. Kalyn plays Brock Cunningham, the love interest of Sweeney’s Millie in the sequel, which means the kiss is part of the story rather than a real-life moment. Earlier set photos from Hoboken showed the 2 actors exchanging lines, with Kalyn placing his hands on Sweeney’s shoulders in what looked like another romantic beat.

Sweeney’s character appears to have more than one romantic storyline. Photos from the same production showed Michele Morrone, who returns as the mysterious groundskeeper Enzo, kissing her on the forehead and taking selfies with her. Together, the images have fueled speculation that Millie’s love life will be one of the sequel’s complicated threads.

For many viewers, the casting is a breakout moment. Kalyn, 28, plays hockey star Dean in ‘Off Campus’, the series adapted from Elle Kennedy’s books, and he has also been seen in the ‘Cruel Intentions’ reboot and in a recurring role on ‘Gen V’. He’s a Toronto-based actor who actually plays hockey in real life, which makes him unusual among the actors who portray athletes on TV.

His profile has grown quickly this year. Prime Video announced that he and Mika Abdalla have been tapped to lead the second season of ‘Off Campus’, following the success of the first. Landing a role opposite Sweeney in a major studio sequel only adds to that momentum.

Kalyn is far from the only face on set. Sweeney returns as Millie, and she’s also an executive producer on the film. Kirsten Dunst plays Wendy Garrick, Brittany Snow has been cast as Marybeth, and Paul Anthony Kelly is also part of the lineup. Feig is back in the director’s chair, with Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book, writing the screenplay.

The sequel adapts the second book in McFadden’s series, which is also titled ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’. That novel doesn’t feature Nina and Andrew Winchester, the characters played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar in the first film, and there has been no announcement about either actor returning. As a result, the new story is expected to move Millie into a fresh environment with a largely new set of characters.

Lionsgate has set the film’s theatrical release for December 17, 2027, almost exactly 2 years after the original. That leaves plenty of time for production to wrap and for the marketing campaign to take shape. In the meantime, the steady stream of set photos shows how eager audiences are to see what Millie does next.

For now, the Manhattan shoot offers one more glimpse of a story that’s still mostly under wraps. Between the new romantic interest, the returning cast and the changing locations, the sequel looks determined to build on the first film’s mix of glamour and menace.
