‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Tracking to Break a Domestic Box Office Record Once Thought Unbreakable

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent the past two weeks methodically dismantling box office records that once seemed untouchable, and the film shows no signs of slowing its historic run. Sony and Marvel’s latest Tom Holland outing has already claimed the third-biggest second weekend of all time domestically, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in that category.

That kind of staying power has fueled growing speculation about just how high the film’s final domestic total could climb. With $655 million already banked in North America after just ten days, ‘Brand New Day’ has generated more money before inflation adjustment than any other film in domestic box office history at that point in its release.

Now, industry trackers are eyeing an even bigger milestone: ‘Brand New Day’ is currently on pace to become the first movie in history to cross $1 billion at the domestic box office, a total that would shatter ‘The Force Awakens’ longstanding record of $936.6 million. That record has stood since 2015, surviving even ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ massive $858.3 million domestic haul without a serious challenger, until now.

Clearing ‘The Force Awakens’ total by any margin would already make history, but crossing $1 billion domestically specifically would require surpassing that record by at least $63.4 million, a benchmark no film has ever previously reached in North America alone. Given the film’s current trajectory, that milestone increasingly looks less like a long shot and more like a genuine possibility.

Much of the optimism around ‘Brand New Day’ reaching that record stems from how well the film has held up week to week rather than relying solely on a massive opening. The film became the fastest movie ever to cross half a billion dollars domestically in just seven days, edging out even ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous pace of eight days to that same benchmark.

Projections based on how similar Spider-Man films have performed over their theatrical runs suggest a range of outcomes for where ‘Brand New Day’ could ultimately land. If the film mirrors the box office legs of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ it would finish around $1.028 billion, while matching ‘No Way Home’s’ staying power would push it to roughly $1.126 billion, and replicating ‘Far From Home’s’ MCU-best performance could bring the total as high as $1.518 billion domestically.

That kind of sustained momentum has been helped along by the film’s reception among audiences, who have kept ‘Brand New Day’ Verified Hot at 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter score. With the film also benefiting from a relatively soft August release schedule and newly added IMAX screenings boosting ticket sales even further, all signs currently point toward the film maintaining its record-breaking pace in the weeks ahead.

Globally, the film has already climbed to $1.67 billion and become the fourth-highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, trailing only ‘No Way Home,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ With so many records already falling in its path, ‘Brand New Day’ finishing as the first film to ever cross $1 billion domestically would cap off what’s already shaping up to be one of the most extraordinary theatrical runs in box office history.
