‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Cracked the All-Time Top 3, Leaving ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ in the Dust
Sony and Marvel’s latest wall-crawling adventure has spent its entire theatrical run defying expectations, but even by those standards, this past weekend delivered something extraordinary. Five weekends into release, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has continued to hold onto the top spot at the domestic box office with a level of consistency rarely seen this deep into a film’s run.
That staying power has been fueled largely by an unusually resilient international performance, one that’s kept pulling in massive numbers even as competing blockbusters like ‘The Odyssey’ battle for the same audience overseas. Week after week, industry trackers have marveled at just how gently the film’s grosses have declined compared to typical franchise sequels at this stage.
That resilience culminated in a genuinely historic milestone over the past several days. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially crossed $2.3 billion worldwide, surpassing ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’s’ $2.33 billion lifetime haul to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office.
The film’s fifth overseas weekend alone brought in a strong $44.5 million, marking just a 36.4% drop from the previous frame, a far gentler decline compared to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ 48.1% dip or ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ steep 65.2% fall at the same point in their respective runs. That performance pushed the film’s international cume past $1.44 billion across 66 markets.
Combined with its $891.8 million domestic total, and against a reported net production budget of $225 million before marketing costs, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has now locked in a $2.33 billion global cume. That figure already surpasses where both ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ stood at the equivalent point in their theatrical runs.
The film’s climb up the all-time charts has been remarkably fast. After overtaking ‘Titanic’s’ lifetime gross just a week earlier, ‘Brand New Day’ has now also passed ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ officially claiming a spot in cinema’s all-time top three, trailing only James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
With its current trajectory holding steady, industry estimates now project the film could ultimately land somewhere between $2.5 billion and $2.7 billion globally by the time its theatrical run winds down, a number that would place it firmly among the biggest box office success stories in Hollywood history.

Domestically, the film is also closing in on a different kind of milestone. Sitting at $891.8 million in North America, ‘Brand New Day’ is now within striking distance of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ unadjusted domestic record of $936.7 million, a benchmark that’s stood since 2015.
With Labor Day weekend still ahead, the film has a real shot at both extending its domestic reign and pushing its global total even higher before competition from new releases picks up in the fall. For Sony and Marvel, the numbers represent a genuine full-circle moment, further cementing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as one of the most commercially dominant franchises in modern movie history.
